Yeah, so Herman's Hermits brings that delightful Pat Boone-ish feel to this song. You know, all the rough spots buffed away, passion in just the right modulated dollops.

Up until 2 minutes ago, Herman's Hermits were the epitomy of the band Mom would approve of me listening to. Now I don't know if Idol was just doing a cover or bringing their real soul to light.
Ok, so those old pics of "Mom" bands like Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark 5, etc. were just covers over the human monster that has been become commonplace on the stage here 30 years later.
While there's not quite the, um, sense of menace that Herr Idol brings to the tune, it's surprisingly convincing. I couldn't help but notice that "When Pigs Fly" also has Don Ho's version of "Shock The Monkey." You don't happen to have that one, do you? Because I would pay cash money to hear that.
Excellent find. Herman's Hermits are just lovely, and they do the song well.
interesting!!! Love it when you post this stuff.
Thanks capndad, but you should have waited. Maybe we could have gotten a few bucks from Ivylander.
This is weird/great. They actually insert their personality in there. A bit unbelievably likeable.
I'm confused... is it Herman's Hermits covering Billy Idol or vice-versa? If the Hermits covered the song... does this mean they are still viable as a band nowadays?
I'm officially confused. Herman's Hermit's broke up around '68 -'69. The song was supposedly written by Billy Idol in the 80s, yet AllMusic lists this version as written by "Broad". I'm guessing that this was some later "reincarnation" of HH. You know, one of the ones that nobody noticed.
Oh yeah, a reconstituted Hermits for sure. If they billed it as Peter Noone it wouldn't have the same effect

Still the ugliest and stupidest sports logo ever seen.
Oh man, you wait 'till that mob shows up!
I assume that Tom Brady won't be in the mob - after all, he's resting at home like a little girl in his frilly pink bed.
deadman, this track is fine with me, as are many of Herman's Hermits' from back in the day. His voice here is way more intense than Pat Boone's, not that intensity is always de rigueur. "All the rough spots buffed away, passion in just the right modulated dollops" describes many of my favored recordings.
capndad, your bit about "covers over the human monster" is right on. Billy Idol recorded the original of his cover version.
Here's Herman's Hermits doing “Little Miss Sorrow, Child of Tomorrow” from 1969.
Nice, Spike. If MOG would let me download tracks I would add Peter Noone and Richard X. Heyman's "Hoosier".
dermahrk, as soon as Mog decides to once again allow you to be dermahrk, I'll be there to listen to it.
There's definitely something to be said for understatement, sort of. It's not that the menace is diminished, but that it is chilling when delivered by this smooth voice. I really like the mature version of his voice. He definitely delivers the guts without chewing the scenery. Instead of kicking in your door, he'll creep into your brain. Nice.
Jeff, i am incredibly digging this cover. i think i like it more than the original, with all its in-love-with-myself rockstar poseur vibe. Herman's Hermits are so adorable.
