War is an ugly thing, one of the ugliest of human endeavours. No matter how noble the cause, regardless of the righteousness of our aims, war is always fraught with the most horrendous atrocities. War is an atrocity.
Liberty is one of life's most precious gifts.
- From way up high where only saints & gods exist....war, what is it good for?. Not that its not an admirable sentiment, indeed I believe that we as a species can have no higher aspiration. Yet its a dangerous world..."I don't feel like Satan but I am to them"........we need those brave men & women to stand watch.
.......and as we here in the USA wind-down our holiday weekend, as we try to digest the burgers, dogs, & beer, as we kick back & relax, let us tip our hats one more time to those who serve, have served, & who will serve. Let us pause a moment to reflect on those who gave all,....and those left behind to try and understand

amen
bingo!
A toast and salute to everyone looking out for us!
That's a wonderful Dylan song; new to me. Our flag has an intelligent design. I Mogged up your post.
Thank you Spike,
Thank you all for your comments.
As the song suggests...it is perhaps Mothers who suffer the most in war. The combat soldier is at times lost in the selflessness of battle, all thought, all energy focused on simply surviving. Adrenelin burns away memory, blocks out anything not an immediate threat. For infinitely long stretches there is no time, there is no space.
For Mothers...The soul-scorching worry, the choked fear is constant, unrelenting. It blocks out color & song and replaces it with knotted muscles & midnight tears
