At The Other End Of The Scale: R.I.P. Jerry Reed

Artist:
**Jerry Reed** passed away this week. A brief note was made here on the MOG.
I'd like to mark his passing with a curiously timely track from almost 35 yrs ago.

He wrote Elvis' hit "Guitar Man" for one, and his "When You're Hot You're Hot" is one of the wittiest lyrics in popular music history. Quite a maverick character, the like of which the younglings of today will never get to hear
Totally agree with that assessment of him Baudolino!
Real sorry to hear that he died. As one can see from that video, he came up with a unique style of country picking, on a nylon-string classical guitar even, which makes him a major figure in the history of c&w guitar. Chet Atkins was so impressed that he recorded quite a few of his instrumentals before Reed became popular. Check out Atkins doing his "A Little Bit of Blues" from his 1964 album Guitar Country.
Reed's first album on RCA Victor, in 1967, featured his original versions of "U.S. Male" and the above-mentioned "Guitar Man" (both of which Elvis soon after had hits with after replacing Reed's vocal track with his own), plus this instrumental, "The Claw," which Dave Edmunds later recorded note-for-note.
Too bad the guy had to die to get on MOG. I like this. A lot.
Jerry Reed was a killer guitarist and I always loved the word play he'd make in his songs... :-(. Goodbye Jerry.
