WHAT ARE WE?

Posted about 1 year ago

dermahrk says: We are being overtaken by the Pod People - the Mog Music Network. Bloggers who don't post tunes or videos, have nothing to say and say it endlessly, and don't interact. They suck.

I have to agree. We seem to be overrun of late by self-aggrandizing links to posts of little or no interest. (to be fair, some of them are very interesting), but the point is.....I guess its becoming depersonalized or something. So many provide links to their works of wonder but take no time to interact.

Oh well. Here we have before us The Band covering the Sam Cooke Classic "A Change Is Gonna Come"

IN these most curious times one thing seems clear A Change Is Coming. With the population waiting, hoping.......

The ominous ugly question hovers over us, like clouds of toxic distrust. Will we all gather and accept the results?

as for the MMN, they're pretty above the radar that it's not that hard to scroll them by. i am still intending tho to make an effort to interact in the hopes they will talk back - if i am feeling sociable, which may never happen. ;D

And speaking of not being very sociable here I am, been using a feed reader for keeping tabs on mog and very grateful the msn no longer evades the filters here. Not sure what the next step would be, perhaps a seperate bog network category for those wishing to browse the blogs and the mogosphere would be clear of them...doubt this would go over.

Jeff could you supply the link to the post that dermark made this comment on? Or was it a post?

There is a filter that you can use to filter those posts out if you wanna.

That aside, like I've said elsewhere, I like the extra content. I don't really see how it is a bad thing to have more stuff to read (especially for me, because I don't haunt other sites), but even so, not ALL people here have to be communicative (hi Neill! :*). We got plenty of talkers, and now we got plenty of extra reading material. So what?

Anyway, just my 2 Euros. Cheers to all, nonetheless :)

Gee, an innocuous comment buried on your post goes front-and-center. Not that I mind.

Yes, we can always scroll past them. But this morning I went through some 57 pages of the M-O-S, having not been on since Labor Day. Rough guess? The Blog Network now makes up 50% of the content, and I suspect as the community of the self-involved bloggers becomes more aware of this, that will increase.

. Sometimes there are 6 or 7 Blog Network posts in a row. God knows we have enough junk on here - self-promoting posts from the talentless, self-promoting posts from the talented (usually limited to 2 posts, then out..). What does this say to someone new to the site, checking it out? That the M-O-S is full of crap.

Still the only solution I see is a catergorizing (and grouping, hint, hint)

Sorry that some of you are not digging the MMN blog posts. I've been looking at a lot of those posts and there are quite a few interesting posts along with some that I don't care to read. But so far it is bringing news, reviews, some songs and some opinion to MOG that enhances the site. As we all know, for each of us, because of our individual interests, there has always been a mix of more interesting posts and less interesting posts.

As you know, the MMN is very new and we are in the process of getting the MMN music bloggers up to speed about MOG and our community here. I am hoping that they will want to participate.

I hope you'll give this some time and the benefit of the doubt.

I think people (and I'm one of 'em) lament the old school way of viewing MOG by using the MOS/All method.  There was time where we were all somewhat connected and I miss that. Well,I actually came in at the tail of it, but that was the way I met everybody.

Bruce had this recent post with Mog father and Mr. Goldberg that also addressed this

I realize the filters are the way to go, but it would be cool if the bloggers mogged back!

    I said this at Bruce's..

I have no problem with bloggers, but unlike people who come for content only, they are bringing something to the table and asking us to look at it.  I have commented, but I haven't got anything back yet.

I feel the same way about bloggers and moggers:If you start a conversation and someone takes the time to answer it, you should answer back. I mean I don't expect an answer when I just say "nice post," but if someone brings dinner and I bring dessert...

All I'm saying is that if you want comments, give comments.  Maybe if the blog doesn't want comments it should be designated a NEWS Blog..

At first I had a little trepidation about commenting on MOG newspeoples posts, but I started to comment and newspeople commented back, and all of a sudden we were Mogging. That's what I'm talking about.

I remember long ago when David was telling us that as the site got larger cliques would develop just by the nature of the size of the MOS.  He was right about that and it seems to work out fine.  Still though, a MOG 101 is a good idea, because we never want the community and conversation clique to be over run by the information clique.  Ultimately it would be great if the two did not have to be seperate.  I'm willing to see if that can happen.

Anna, B42 said it well. I have two qualities:

    1) I am an optimist. I never filter the M-O-S because I might miss someone new who's interesting. I always, always scan every page.

    2) I am a crank. I enjoy complaining, and am willing to give you lessons on becoming a bitter, old man (well...two out of three...)

  19. B42 says

"because we never want the community and conversation clique to be over run by the information clique", I don't believe this would happen given the welcoming nature of the mogos and by not having the blogs in the mix I think people would concentrate and comment more on the individual/personal aspects of the non mmn-blog posts.

I took a look at Mog Music Network Blogs in search of something to read. There's a lot there, but, at the same time, nothing at all. At this time, I feel like the movie character "Murphy Jones," who walked out of a slasher flick playing at the local theater because he "saw no reason to repeat the experience" of working in a cattle slaughterhouse. The foci of MMN bloggers is so narrow that it reminds me of cable TV narrowcasting taken to the Nth degree. Would I dream of doing a World or Music of Hawaii Blog? Not now. I know so little about World and Hawaiian music that I'd be called out on some pronouncement too suite. Plus, one needs to have something to say to "do the website/Blog thing." I'll keep looking over this side of MOG and "sample the waters" for now.

Hey,  this is quite a dialog and I thank you all for your comments.  There are many excellent points made here,  but there is one other point worth considering;  We all have lives, you know?  And in our lives there are many things we have to do, there are many things we want to do, and time is finite.  I sit down at the computer to see what's up at MOG.  I don't mind scrolling as I, like Mark n many others, read each page.  I don't wanna miss something.  There are no doubt many wonderful places to visit, but as of yet none has captured my interest enough to 'bookmark' or anything.  But I rule nothing out.

And just as an aside.....Spike you're always witty, wise, and informative.  Your posts and comments may sometimes be pointed and spikey, but you're usually tryin' for smiles, not for blood.  I have never known you to make a condescending remark.

point taken.  we've been noticing the lack of integration ourselves.  so i've got to ideas.

1 - we've created a MOG 101 document for MMN members explaining to them that this is a community with advice on how to assimilate and be good community members. they're all getting this on monday.

2 - offer a "mog posts only" filter?  (which sucks and is a band-aid, but i can understand).

Agreed Michael, it's just that you have to find a space for them. The problem seems to be the automatic feed, no real thought is going into adding the post to Mog, the thrill of writing, commenting, debate, the agony of posts and comments eaten, these are things that brought us together in the first place. For auto feed blogs there is none of the learning curve involved, set it and forget it. It's not "Mogging" as we have come to know it.

wow....I'm late to the party, as usual so my 2 cents will go mostly unread.  However, I'm self absorbed enough to spout my words regardless.

I MOG because of the community.  I have made some amazing friends, people I have met in real life, some people I have hosted in my home...because of the give and take and personal life sharing of MOG.  There is nothing out there like this and Hyman should go to bed proud of his baby.  Thank you.

A big part of the charm of this site is the warmth the MOGGERs, especially in welcoming new MOGGERS, in welcoming the people who are here for the community experience.  While I do enjoy the Blogger's posts, I feel like most of them are akin to reading a magazine article...and I can comment my fool head off, but they aren't going to respond, any more than my most recent issue of SPIN is going to talk back to me.  These Bloggers aren't MOGGERS.

I want the ability to separate the B's from the M's...but to still comment on the Blogger's content, just in case I can convince them to become part of the community that is MOG.

If this becomes overrun with one-sided conversations, it no longer will be the MOG I fell in love with.

ok, maybe that was more than 2 cents.
