TOXIC TUESDAY WITH...(dare I say it?) THE BEATLES

Posted almost 2 years ago

I have debated with myself since Mike The Knife started his wondermous Toxic Tuesday posts. I know this is gonna piss some people off...(and you know how I hate to do THAT)..but to me..."The Long And Winding Road" has always been a toxic embaressment. There, I've said it & I'm not sorry. I know the party line is that Phil Spector is supposed to have ruined this saccharine sobfest, to which i would reply....feces of the bovine species!! It was nothing to begin with..Spector only amplified the obvious. Let It Be (naked) did not a whit to change my opinion. I must have a dozen different versions or snippets thereof....they all hit me like fingernails on a blackboard.

I'll post it for you...but I sure as hell won't listen to it! It was an embaressment then...its an embaressment now.

Maybe if it showed up on a muzak compilation it would go down a bit easier.......but on an album of rocknroll? From The Beatles? NFW!!!

I said it and I'm not sorry. (& Let It Be is only slightly less toxic)

Legendary music thug Don Arden had a saying... "you can't polish a turd".

Allen Klein had a lot to do with Get Back's resurrection. Plenty of bands have "lost" albums, I've always felt that Get Back/Let It Be should have been The Beatles', but they just had to attempt a western communism, didn't they? Abbey Road was the final chapter. Let It Be was a mere afterword. From Lennon's childish, tentative bass part (I can play a better bass part than that one) to the ridiculous orchestra ready to swallow McCartney whole, "The Long and Winding Road" is among the worst songs on the Beatles' worst album. A truly toxic selection.

I agree.  Fragments of Fecies.   No unified artistic vision.  The named items are good MOR, I'll grant.

It was all a typical McCartney ego exercise - John, George and Ringo just phoned it in, IMO.

Scotty.....I'm glad you like it...Different strokes & all that.

DetroitBob.....100% agree.  Except I think Revolver should have been their last.  Remove Eleanor Rigby & its a stone solid Masterpiece.  McCartney would never again reach such glorious heights as a lyricist.

    Ivylander...You nailed it.

genderblender2...I do too,  I do too.  But perhaps we define "sad" differently.

Spike.........go easy on it.  It may be politicaly incorrect to pick on such a fey song

bgrass,  yeah, it doesn't sound like there's any commitment or passion at all

    Spike 1.......maybe...but who needs MOR?

Harry Kirshna....Hey, welcome aboard.  You'll find plenty who'll agree with you & planty who don't.  But please, post some music, join the community.  Get to know me & i think you'll find i'm a real asshole!

Only in a flash sideways reality might any song by the Beatles other than Revolution #9, be considered toxic. :)

You are so correct about this that I do believe I did a Toxic Tuesday post about the same abominable number when I started this vile tradition a year or so ago. Or I think I did. Or I should've...

@Rex,  There are a few by the Fabs that are highly toxic, & several more that merely offend, But for the most part, like Tony The Tiger would say....."They're Great".

Mike, it certainly wouldn't surprise me. But with this level of toxicity i think a booster shot is in order.

i agree. i must've been 3 y.o. when i first heard the song, and i hated it then. it's like a soap opera, but with nothing amusing whatsoever.
