Three From Robbie Robertson
-
Artist:
Robbie Robertson rose to fame as the guitarist & chief songwriter for The Band. A gifted conjuror of time & place, So many of his songs seem to spring from sepia-toned memory fragments that float through our collective concousness. Songs such as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Rag Mama Rag", Get Up Jake", & myriad others have the absolute ring of authenticity....the tone & feel of timeless songs that float down through generations as part of the oral tradition of history.
His Post-Band music sees the continuing development of his story telling talent, & if he doesn't have the magnificent ensemble (The Band) to bring them to life...he still surrounds himself with musician's who's knowledge of the roots run as deep as his own. "Sonny Got Caught In The Moonlight"
While his lyrics were always enigmatic, a bit surreal, they were are always grounded in an identifiable reality. Thus Virgil Kane with his perfect dialect can swear by the mud below his feet & it sounds like a sacred oath & a bitter condemnation.
....This Track....."Take Your Partner By The Hand".....establishes a new mark for Robbie Robertson's ability to fuse surreal, Goya-esque images in a gritty smoking choking reality.
.......His most recent projects have found him reacquianting himself with his Native American Ancestry. We find his music becoming more....mystic, more exploring. His attempts to fuse the mystic side of his history with the music hw grew up with has met with mixed reaction. I Like It...but I'm biased

preachin to the choir here my man
nice post!
When I saw something on PBS where he and Marty Scorcese were talking..it was like they both wanted to be each other..Robbie is "cursed" though to make cinematic songs and Marty is "cursed" to make Rock N' Roll cinema.
Skinwalker was my fave of the 4 (count 'em 4) tunes:)
Cody B....clearly labeled as a bonus track, but shoot me if you must
I shant! But only because it was a bonus track..a straight 4 is almost a playlist.
Now you're waving my flag there DMDM. Nice post.
DM, you described his work accurately, not an easy task. Thanks for bringing us more up to date. Really good tuneage.
@capn...Happy to do it. How goes the Olympics?
Spike, thanks, but my feeble attempts pale in comparison.
