PLUNDERING PEPPERLAND FOR SUNDAY UNDER THE COVERS
.....I've said before....I'm drawn to covers like bird poop to a newly cleaned windshield. This is especialy true when covers of my favorite artists are involved. Realizing that The Beatles are a tough act to follow, i try to be generous in my assessments....but 99% of the time........The Beatles did it better. There are a few instances where i think the Fabs got bested......One of which I've posted before, long ago when we were little, but i'm gonna post it again. Phoebe Snow.....Don't Let Me Down
for my money Ms Snow transforms this song so well. She takes Lennon's lewd barstool boast into the reverie of a Lady In Love. Compare how she sings (@ the 2:28 mark) about how..... "nobody every realy done me"........She's sitting at the breakfast table, tea in hand, reliving the experience, feeling the ecstacy. As opposed to Lennon's own reading of the song...He's sitting in a smokey bar bragging to his friends with his hand on his crotch
The next track...Suzy Bogguss.....All My Loving. Now, I do not contend that this is better than....I'm just saying any excuse to slip Chet Atkins into a post....well, thats just gravy.
i don't want to overwhelm anyone.......so just a couple more. I seem to be in the minority when it comes to Golden Earring's version of "I"ll Be Back". I guess i like the slightly chunkier version, it builds nicely to a crescendo of sorts. Good rocknroll, thats all.
We'll include this one from the sadly overlooked Big Head Todd & The Monsters (Killed off by their own moniker). But its a creditable version of a song from Sgt Pepper thats not covered very often........Within You, Without You
and finally.... ...........Harry Nilsson...........This is the track that brought him to the Beatles' attention... ....the oft' posted.....and thoroughly delightful....You Can't Do That

Wow - Golden Earring. Now that's an obscure one!
Hi Dave...yeah, what did you think of it?
Hey man,
I thought it was pretty good, actually.
As for Golden Earring - I used to play the song "Radar Love" in a band (me on the drums)
;-)
Dave.....way back in the jurrassic era...when discs were made of vinyl and were tortured by uncaring sylii
.....I had a Golden Earring live album & they did a (what i remember as) killer version of Eigth Miles High that took up a whole side
You need to use your signficiant influence, deadman - and get that version on the MOG player here ;-)
influnce...I am but a germ on the leg of a flea on this dog, Dave
Phoebe Snow.....Don't Let Me Down... nice version indeed.
Suzy Bogguss.....All My Loving... maybe not better but very good.
Golden Earring's version of "I"ll Be Back"...wow is right nice cover.
Big Head Todd & The Monsters... Within You, Without You... a more than creditable version.
Harry Nilsson...You Can't Do That...that is a different take but an enjoyable one at that.
Nonsense deadman. Your "status" is "blazing".
But - poor old dansemacabre - who's he gotta _______ to get a little respect around here . . .
ole Harry is the icing on the cake
After all that you put 5 songs up..classic.
Phoebe's a good 'un. good thing I waited for the chorus and the steel pan second part..
Would've preferred an entire instrumental on 2.
No to number 3.
Have a soft spot for Todd..(you are right about the penis-centric name hurting them) from my Chicago days...but the cover seems too much the same. There's a good reason they don't do this one over and over.
Nilsson...nice. A smart aleck's delight.
5 songs..I don't believe you man.
.....what can i say? Its a
stimulus packagejobs creation billI'm sure this post will receive bipartisan support.
DM..As someone who rarely appreciates covers, I'm impressed. Some ggod work in all that!
Hey Cody...gettin' a little close to the edge, aren't ya???lol!
Great post! Brought back a great memory . . . of Suzy Boggus -- I saw her do a free show in a small little outdoor band shell at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron in 1987 or 88, right before she became a moderate country star. It was obvious she was going places, so I took a drive up from Sioux Falls with some folks to see her. (Sioux Falls was the Sahara Desert for any kind of good show back then.)
What a lovely person -- there were a bunch of little kids dancing right in front her and she brought them up on stage and played to them, really a class act. Her best cover, and probably biggest hit, is John Hiatt's Drive South.
Great guitar work on this song by Chet. I will. The Nilsson song is great too.
I will argue music in a totally partisan manner anytime....I'm on hiatus from the other arguments. I have enough stomach issues going on in real life..I don't need any new on line agita.
I hear ya!!! ;-)
@funoka...thanks for a great little story...from the little i know of her music...Suzy comes across as a warm person
@inrumford....ole Harry is always icing.
@Cody B..... admit it...you can no longer defend this.....never mind...I know you won't rise to the bait. You're a better man for it, too.
Scooter7...as i say...i usually am disappointed, to a degree, by covers, no matter how good they're usually inferior...but there are some......
I believe this is what you were thinking of, Jeff. It's in 2 parts.
could be, Rex. The mind is......reeling from my encounter today with burning bush
Reggie?
Love the Golden Earrnig stuff.
And i hear they could spell too.
Is it pronounced "fish"?
LOL!
The Phoebe Snow thing is pleasant - and lacks her frequent vocal excesses. Yeah, it's probably better than the Beatles' version - because it's one of Lennon's weakest songs. His songs about Joke-O usually are.
Love the Boggus/ Atkins number.
I'll Be Back is one of the most perfect Beatle songs recorded. This cover is ok, but you can't beat those Macca-Lennon harmonies.
