Wayback Wednesday (Hope & Change)

Posted over 2 years ago

.....No...I'm not gonna get political here. I said at the end of November that i was hopeful, but not optimistic. I'm not as hopeful anymore....unless one counts the election this year.

Casey Bill Weldon, some say, is a link between the early Slide masters....Blind Willie McTell, Barbeque Bob & others, to the "modern" electric slide players of later generations. An original member of the Memphis Jug Band, with whom he recorded extensively, he was also an early "session" player, recording with a wide variety of artists under myriad psuedonyms, as well as the occasional "side" recorded under his own name.

That's a great recording, old but new to me.  He has his own slide guitar style.  I didn't realize he used to be in the Memphis Jug Band.  Once on airliner headphones I listened to a blues program put together by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and he talked about his love for Weldon, and included tracks by him.  Weldon may have heard this slightly earlier recording (1934) of the same name by Leroy Carr (piano) with Scrapper Blackwell (guitar), a source for Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom."
