ASHES TO ASHES, FUNK TO FUNKY

Posted about 1 year ago
There have been several interesting posts today concerning what is funky.First The lovely "**Michelle**":http://mog.com/mktackabery/blog_post/165972#write-commentand then the ever delightful "**Madeline**":http://mog.com/Madeline_Burke/blog_post/166073So here's a post by the always exasperating deadmandeadman stretching the definition further.Meade Lux Lewis was born in 1905 in Chicago, Ill. A musical prodigy, he quickly absorbed the "boogie-woogie" styles of such legends as Jimmy Yancey(?), and the sounds emanating from New Orleans.Best known(?) for his **Honky Tonk Train Blues**, he recorded numerous tracks under numerous names until shortly before his death in 1964.And folks, this is funky.

  1. annieander says Wouldn't have guessed this is of the funky genre...nope, not in a million years, not for a million dollars...I would have lost that bet.

  3. Madeline Burke says This is funky,my friend. and...he was only 54 when he died! A relatively young man. I gotta know the back story...I wonder about the "he recorded numerous tracks under numerous names" until shortly before his death. Some of these old time guys' bios are often tragic in any number of ways.Great Tunage.

  4. deadmandeadman says Thanks Cody. Annie, this is as fine and funky as fried frog legs for Friday's feast. (Which makes sense grammatically, I guess, but was only an excuse to do some alliterating.)

  9. annieander says Well I'm here, and I just don't know what makes this funky...but then, I failed musicology in college...so what do I know...evidently funky...I don't know funky. I'm a flipping failure on not figuring out funky feelings. Flup.

  11. consumerx says Annie, I don't know if will help, but if you can imagine a bassman carry that left hand line he's got going, then a drummer swingin' the beat, and perhaps singer or guitarist wailing on top, the funk picture becomes much clearer, at least for me anyway. Nice cut DMDM.

  12. Spike says Back in the Twenties or Thirties the adjective "funky-butt" meant down and dirty, referring to music. Funk, I think, meant, early on, a stink. Mozart is never funky. deadmandeadman, you may have just devirginated MOG, boogie-woogie-wise.

  13. Spike says In the video, the rejected singer is the only one who's not high yellow.

  14. poebegone says this is sooo goood. he was born in 1905. i was just a tree then. (for believers of reincarnation, anyway.) i love that his boogie-woogie style is not as overdone as i would have expected from the lot. straight up, funky but chill, no excess baggage.

  16. dermahrk says The great thing about this is that he needs no drummer, no bass player, no singer. It's just fine as it is.
