Odetta Covers The Strolling Bones

Posted over 2 years ago

.........Covering the Rolling Stones can be tricky, so many of their songs are all tied up with who the Rolling Stones are/were. No one else can sing Monkey Man with any real plausibility, you know? To be sure there have been great, perhaps superior versions of some Stones songs.....(Think Gram Parsons' Wild Horses)...but for the most part...the Stones catalog remains largely unmined.

....And so....submitted for your approval.....Odetta...who needs no introduction.......No Expectations

Perfect alternate name for the Stones. I think the orchestration is a bit much.

You're right about the Stones being tricky to cover.  Trying to put a blanket over Jagger while he's running all over the stage is no mean feat.  Odetta covered another rock group, fellow Fantasy-label act Credence Clearwater, on her 1954 ten-inch LP (with Larry Mohr) The Tin Angel Presents Odetta & Larry, which my mother used to play: "Old Cotton Fields at Home."
