WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

PURE POP FOR SONIC PEOPLE

Posted about 1 year ago
Sonic Youth have carved a career out of swarming clouds of blistered feedback, beautiful dissonance, oblique pointed lyrics and a take-no-prosoners approach to creating industrial age soundscapes. As they have grown and refined their vision their sound has gradually drifted towards the mainstream.Their influence can be sensed in so much of today's sound as the ever-shifting mainstream has inched closer.Perhaps only within the context of all the journeys through howling blizzard storms of psychic meltdowns, rave-ups, rants, and sound sculptures can **Rather Ripped** be considered a pop record, but it is. It is.This is pop music from the sonicsphere, short catchy tunes, concise, tuneful in a typically angular way.Needless to say, hard core fans were somewhat disheartened. While we didn't feel it was a sell out, some felt it was an unnecessary reach-out. We could have told them,....The Youth is not for everyone, and they shouldn't try to be.

  1. dermahrk says Ok, time for you to start on peace in the Middle East and a cheap renewable energy source, because you, my friend, have already achieved the impossible once. You got me to admit that I *like* this song by Sonic Youth. Rats! Now who can be my go-to example of bad music? You've made Mogging more difficult for me fer sure..... Of course, most Sonic Youth fans would probably say if *I* like it, it must suck....

  2. deadmandeadman says One of the definite strengths of the band from the start has been the strong contributions of **Kim Gordon**. Watching (hearing) her evolve as singer, songwriter and bassist is but one of the pleasures this band has provided. Equally as important as **Thurston Moore**, and a stronger presence than **Lee Renaldo**, Ms Gordon has been the pearl in the oyster and at other times the grit at it's heart. Hopefully S. Y. will keep the independant releases coming, where they can stretch out and shronk to their heart's content. S. Y. 3 is to kill for. But Mark, you wouldn't like it.

  3. dansemcabre says hmm I have to say I preferr the older less linear youth this is too formulaic. Sonic youth is mood music and usually if I'm in that mood I wanna hersomthing that sounds like a bunch of drunken junkies broke into a studio and started recording shit.

dansemcabre, I wish the kind of music you describe here were more often as eloquent and poetic on some level as your description itself is.  The audience for gnarly and gangly sounds grows steadily.  The human brain is truly resilient.
