Sunday Under The Covers........How Perceptions (& tastes) Change

Posted over 2 years ago

.....It has been told to me by some of the older MOGgers here about that our tastes change as we get older. I think they're right. Or they may be, anyway. I know there's some music i really liked at one point that is now all but unplayed & certainly not missed (ie: Blue Oyster Cult). Sometimes, there's an explaination.....at one time i had a dozen Barbara Streisand albums....because the girl i was with loved "Babs"..........When we went our seperate ways she became the first & only one to walk away from our relationship with albums in tow.

............which brings us to Ringo Starr, almost everyone's second favorite Beatle. Sentimental Journey was released during my hard-core "Beatlemaniac" phase & i thought at the time it was an utter embaressment. This was Mom & Dad's music done badly! Oh the shame!! As a result, my vinyl version of this album is almost cherry.

.....So now? Though i have much better versions of most of these tunes I finds Ringo's versions to be charming, in their own way. Not everything "works" by any conventional definition........

.............And yet....................to those of you of a certain age.......Do the memories of the Fab Four inform our assessment of these tracks?

....

....having said all that...Some of George Martin's production is sometimes just too cute.....& not in a good way

I believe that our tastes do change as we get older. I know that mine have mellowed those hard rock days have lapsed for the most part. There still are old songs that I would listen to but nothing new in the hard rock genre seems to interest me any longer.

I disagree. My tastes are unchanged in a way. The music I loved at 13 I still love today. They have broadened a lot, however.

I have to agree with you about the syrupy production but also about the fact that I find these tracks kinda charming - oh, I don't want to hear them on a regular basis, but enjoyed listening to them. Still, this is a Ringo release I don't own - and that is unlikely to change.

My tastes resemble a tree. I started mid-trunk and worked my way down to the roots. I keep discovering great acts in the trunk and even where branches start to come off, but most of the ends of the branches need pruning.

As for Ringo, I think that he has said that Sentimental Journey was a record for his mother and "step ladder", Elsie and Harry Graves.

His first second album, Beaucoups of Blues, was for himself.

His second first album, Ringo, is the place for anybody who really wants to experience a proper Ringo Starr LP (with a little help from his friends, of course).

I use to love the Beatle's, & Rolling Stones as a kid, but once I discaveres Zep, & Sab my taste in music just seemed to get heavier, & heavier overtime. It still is for some reason!

hey, good question. i am right along with dermahrk in preferring to think that mine expanded.

certain music, including Beatles ones, i've come to find i only like to hear infrequently. sometimes part of the reason is fatigue - ubiquitous radio playing ruined my enjoyment of some really good songs.

there was that one ex who liked chill out music, and i liked it along with him for years, and much later, i realized i don't even really like that chill out stuff that much at all.
