WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

OK< SO I STILL HAVE THIS GRATEFUL DEAD THING GOING ON

Posted about 1 year ago
It is important to remember that the **Grateful Dead** were a ??Rhythm & Blues based?? rock n roll band, with jugband/folk/country sensibilities around the edges.Early Dead shows would find Pigpen gettin' his Mojo workin', riffing on classic blues with an authentic vibe all his own.And the Dead had acoustic shows long before "unplugged" made it hip.And they had three great vocalists, dermahrk's assertions notwithstanding. From Bear's Choice then, we have the Dead's transcendent take on an old folk classic "Dark Hollow". Their Rhythm and blues will come in the comments.

  1. steve simon says yes pig's impact on this band cannot be properly measured. he was as much a part of the grateful dead as anyone. bless his soul. i heard that epic, final alligator from the final fillmore east run of 71' recently, now that is sublime

  4. Spike says Their "Hard to Handle" sounds great! Is that really Pigpen singing? It sounds a lot better than his mangling of "Turn on Your Lovelight." If you go to the 2:30 mark of this video, you get another version of "Hard to Handle" (1970).

  7. Paul Busch says How I Love The Grateful Dead..and how they float around my Ipod! Pig was a star and was an early rapper no doubt. Took me awhile to get into the NEW Grateful Dead after he left us. Oh come on don't dis The Black Crowes for doing what they do, they can play, especially now with Luther D joining them, but they always have been 'parrots', but very good parrots. Peace From Syndey

  8. scotfree says I have nothing against this. A great old-timey feel, and let my education continue on "Hard to Handle" - I had never heard any other version than The Crowes! The Dead are just one of those bands I never got into heavy, the only bit of theirs 'round here is the "Skeleton's..." greatest hits, but for comps, the only one that gets played more is Credence. Everytime one of you Deadheads post though, It sounds more and more like I may need one more addiction. And I do have one story...

  9. Cody B says Of course, the Otis Redding original of Hard to Handle ain't too shabby either. Lovin' Dark Hollow, grandpa.

  10. dermahrk says Since Pigpen brought an R&B influence into the hippie-dippie (by the way, in the 60s in Ann Arbor, some bar advertised a local young lady as ??hippie strippee??) world of the Dead, it is a real shame he didn't stick around long enough to influence their future recordings. He drank himself to death, which I can understand. If I were in the Dead, I'd do the same.

  11. dermahrk says And neither of these tracks will play for me. Is that my karma coming back to me, or do I need to drop some acid to pretend it's groovy?
