Very good song but also one that exemplifies the problem of the post-Robertson group- they lost their lyricist. As great as Danko was and Helm and Hudson are musically, songwriters they were/are not.
Well Bob, yes n no. One could make a legitimate argument that Mr J.R. Robertson was an over-rated lyricist. Very often his (almost embaressing) lyrics are brought alive by stunning performances. It Makes No Difference being a great example.
....I liked Jericho, & still do, because it updates, without abandoning, the Band's sound. The vocals by turn & Garth's friendly eeerie keyboard work really shine. If the lyric is weak...and thats not a given, it is so in comparison only to The Band's very highest peaks.
Of course the lyrics and performance are great, but my point was that nobody in The Band had a part in its writing... Marty Grebb and Daniel Moore wrote "Shine A Light". Of the thirty-five songs released by The Band in the 1990s, twenty-one were interpretations of the works of others. Of the fourteen originals or semi-originals, eight were on 1998's Jubilation.
Still...I like it.
...and further still.... Interpreting the works of others has long been a part of The Band's oeuvre.
