The White Stripes.................Death Letter

Posted about 1 month ago

.........It may seem odd to say that Jack White is under-appreciated, but i believe it to be true. he has a scholar's love of the roots and a rebel's approach to them. He knows his Son House, his Robert Johnson, Willie McTell, and he knows his Hendrix & Stevie Ray, His Neil Young & his Ry Cooder. As the White Stripes or in any one of his side projects he displays a prospector's enthusiam & an acolyte's devotion.

The video

.....Son House....his guitar will raise the hairs on your scalp.

Great tunage man! And I'll agree with you that jack white is very under appreciated. Of course in this era of slick over produced music, roots music is pretty much under appreciated. I believe that there will always be an underground movement of people who love raw emotion and realness in their music. And it may be that rebel attitude that makes mr white both unappreciated and special! It seems you can either pander to the masses or make somthing honest, you can't it seems, do both.

I'm ashamed to admit that I was one of those people who underappreciated Mr White.  I found a few of the Stripes songs catchy and never really gave the Racounteurs a fighting chance.

But The Dead Weather has sunk its painted claws deep into me.  Raw emotion.  Oh HELL yeah.  The CD is great but the live performance (don't make me dig out photos) was pure sex sex and rock and roll. And the funny thing is, I can feel Jack's influence at a personal intrinsic level, as if I were tuned in all the time, but just didn't know it.

Guess who's now going through Jack White's back catelogue and finding appreciation anew.

I've been a fan of Jack's since John Peel had The White Stripes in session not long before he passed away.

At that time his blues riffs were dutiful, but I think he's improved immensely over the years. I must post some songs up of a live CD he and The Raconteurs recorded at a concert I was lucky enough to be attending some 18 months ago.

Also, to his credit he's a fanboy like us listeners, he soaks it all up like a sponge and he's incredibly hard working.

    O.K...O.K...I'll calm down now.

You hit the nail right on the head. He is well versed in the masters of blues, rock, as well as country. He teamed up with Loretta Lynne for Van Lear Rose. He never seizes to amaze.

It was fun watching the Dead Weather show at Austin City Limits on Hulu while I Tivo'd Wilco and Neil Young at Farm Aid on Sunday.  Missed them live and it was the best i could do.  His singing, drumming and guitar work were pretty stellar, but you're right Amber.....the band actually looked like they felt it.
