This is the template for Jeff Buckley's version, no? While nobody would ever say Cale had the greater vocal ability, at least he has the maturity and world-weariness that allows him to imbue the lyric with some feeling of experience that I always felt was missing from Buckley's much-hyped performance.
I've always been a big fan of John Cale. He had that world-weariness way back in the 60s even! This version of "Hallelujah" is featured in the movie "BASQUIAT" and is appropriately placed for full dramatic effect.
If one is a Leonard Cohen fan, one might appreciate Nick Cave's album "The Boatman Calls," which in my opinion is the best Leonard Cohen album Cohen never made
Another highly worthy John Cale cover version (though it probably pisses some people off royally) is "Heartbreak Hotel." It sounds like a place where people actually do die.....

nice
.....@Baudolino...I think there was alot missing from most Buckley recordings. Frankly, i never "got" Buckley.
@ The Sage Of Rumford......Talkative this morning, huh?
Huh?
Fredly, I never did get Buckley either. This is nice though, as The Sage Of Rumford has already said so eloquently.
Huh?
Agreed that this is the definitive version - I prefer it even to Cohen's version, which has always sounded a trifle smug....
Lenny"s like that from time to time...

Cale's "Heartbreak Hotel" is indeed spooky and awesome. Good call!
ivylander! where ya been.
Jeff, the live version is a lot different from the studio cut. Both are great in very different ways.
