SXSW? YEAH, RIGHT. OUT HERE ON THE RIGHT COAST IT DRIZZRABLE! COLD RAIN?SNOW?SLEET MIX. THE PERFECT DAY FOR A CANOE RACE.

Posted almost 4 years ago
I'm not sure how many years this race has been happening, I haven't entered in a decade. Although I grew up on the river and I know it like a foot knows it's stocking I've never won, or even came in in the top five. But its a lot of fun, for participants and spectators alike. The start point is just below the waterfall. And the first obstacle is the bridge about fifty yards downstream. The river is fast and furious at this time of year, no place for amateurs, so of course there are many. Although the race is well monitored there is a certain amount of risk to racers and their canoes. SO now I'm going to watch for a while, maybe snap some photos to post. But before I do, one last photo.I had to take this picture, there's someone here who'll love it if he sees it.

  1. dermahrk says Awwwww......At least I know he's safely locked in a car that is *not* hot. Slim Whitman? Yodeling? I am impressed....and I always thought that Slim Whitman was some joke. Things change..... Uh, I have to ask. Exactly how DOES one maneuver a canoe over a small waterfall? Aim the front of the boat at it and hope or pray?

  4. waydutch says I hear ya ivy - had a college roommate for a bit who was taken with Slim - had bought an album from those short infomercial they used to have all over cable in the old days. Definately starting to feel a bit like spring's on the way here the past few days

  5. runobodyii says I love the voice and what he does with it; it's that shrieking instrument (what in hell is it?) that shreds my ears. Happy to be heading back into my slowcore, heavy on the bass. Lovely post. Down here in the other Commonwealth it's spring: daffodils and singing birds and tulips bashing their fists against the ground, shouting "I'm coming out!": at the top of their considerable lungs. Look forward to the race update - - I'm an incurable hydrophobe that loves all things water nonetheless.

  6. Spike says In the 1996 film Mar Attacks, only the sound of the great Slim Whitman singing "Indian Love Call" kills the invading Martians. Hearing him brings me to life. But that's just water under the bridge.

  7. Spike says Mars

  8. earthman says Man that was great ! runobodyii I think the shrieking comes from the steel guitar.

  9. poebegone says dm, i love this post. the whole thing about canoeing and water images, to the tune of Slim Whitman, works for me. what runobodyii said: "I'm an incurable hydrophobe that loves all things water nonetheless." - duly seconded.
