The Possiblities! Oh The Lost Oppurtunities! But Its Probabn

I'm not sure how many of you read or (more importantly) listened to "this":http://mog.com/Madeline_Burke/blog_post/148072But you should have.Think of the possibilities. Ry Cooder & Taj Mahal in a band together. They were very young, but they had already made names for themselves. Taj Mahal was known around Cambridge & Ry Cooder was already held in awe in folklorist's circles around Santa Monica. That the two would meet (after Taj drove a borrowed Caddy cross-country) should have been the stuff of legend. Instead, though they recorded quite a bit, only one single was ever released. **The Devil's Got My Woman** & **Candy man**One of those will follow, (at some point) in the comments. For now, listen to their pre-Monkee take on the **Goffen-King** composition**Take A Giant Step**.This song has become a concert staple for Taj.

  1. ivylander says It rocks - that much is certain. So where did all the other tracks go?

  2. deadmandeadman says Bill, They were finally released on cd in '92. Taj did some vocal over-dubbing on a couple three tracks. This was the flip-side of their flop single, a nice take on The Rev Gary Davis's **Candy Man**, probably recorded to let Ry show his chops. ~1GVKCf0bOAJ.mp3~

  4. Spike says That's a wonderful duet guitar break they play in the middle of "Candy Man." One consolation for the disappointment of such future luminaries not hitting it big as the Rising Sons is the fact that their best songs (such as "Statesboro Blues," "Diving Duck Blues" and "Corrina, Corrina") ended up on Taj Mahal's first two albums with much better arrangements, Ry Cooder playing guitar and Mahal singing lead.

  5. deadmandeadman says Yes Spike, you're correct. All of the recordings the Rising Sons made were under the direction of Terry Melcher. He wanted to groom stars. They wanted to play music.

  7. dermahrk says Your post title is close to incoherent - misspelling possibilities, opportunities, and whatever the hell *probabn* is supposed to be - and then it stops. So, forget that and read the body of the text and listen. Ahhh, much better. I love the track. But I'm a bit confused. They only released one single, but this is not one of the songs? So they also released an album? Or is this something dug out of the archives? I don't remember a Monkees version. I bought one Taj Mahal LP (??Giant Step??) back in the day but it did not press my buttons. This certainly does.
