Heavy Fogs (of various kinds), Warm Sweaty Nights, Music that elevates The Soul, Music that Shakes Your Booty

The Staple Singers just may be America's First Family of Gospel Soul. The Music of The Church fused with the sensual, earthy attitude of Delta Blues.**Roebuck "POP" Staples** and his daughters are as steeped in the traditional music of America as anyone can be.With Pop's light, hopeful tenor and Mavis' husky contralto the fire and ice nature of great Gospel-soul, the central themes of sin and redemption at the heart of all folk music, is personified, given voice.Pop's voice, soft spoken, humble yet hopeful, heart-achingly sweet or heart-breakingly sad, is seduced by the earthy harmonies of Mavis, weaving in and out, repeating, contrasting, pulsing with longing, release from earthy bonds. The **Staple Singers'** catalog is dotted with priceless gems and bursting with other great music, one could do much worse.

  1. FluxCapacitor says Great pick, I discovered this band last year in a friend's home (they were burgalizing it...!) Seriously, they should be more well known.

  2. ivylander says This is fine stuff - indeed, the Staples are incapable of anything else. Gotta admit, though, I love their earlier, more gospelly stuff, like this one...

  3. Bartleby says The Staple Singers are definitely the finest gospel outfit to make the leap to a secular public. Both yours and Ivy's cut are exquisite. Thanks for this.

  5. Spike says deadmandeadman, if you like "I Had a Dream," check out a 2-CD reissue of their Vee Jay label recordings, titled _Glory It's..._ (Recall SMD CD 431) from 2000. It has all their best stuff. I wonder if Martin Luther King Jr. ever heard that 1958 recording of the song.
