I don't hate it
Is that a rattle that gives the beat a speedy double-time sound? It gives it a lot of pep and redeems it so that I won't hate it either. Yes!
I don't hate it, but I have to say that I hae ma doots I'll listen to it for a second time either
i love the cramps; i love elvis; the cramps love elvis... nothing wrong with this picture
just 4 the hell of it.
The Cramps are good stuff. Not my favorite kind of psycobilly, but then again they pretty much invented it.
...the above does not constitute an endorsement of any product or baby
It's pretty cool for what it is. However, for me the fulcrum of the Elvis version is that brilliant. elemental conversation between the guitar and the drum: "TWANG TWANG," "WHACK WHACK." Also, the Cramps altered the lyrics from "If you can't find a partner get a wooden chair" to "If you can't find a partner you will get the chair." The original lyrics are one of the great double-entendres in rock. Why would they change that?

to make it their own. and they've altered a few of the other lyrics to suit their schtick and milieu as well.
don't know if you have ever seen the cramps perform live in concert. you'll unfortunately and quite sadly never be able to see lux interior again... but he was one of the sexiest and most menacing yet fun performers ever. unique. sure, there have been many imitators, but lux was at the forefront. he was able to balance the elements of creepy sexy and cool.
that's a photo i took of the cramps in 1978 at the whisky a go go. their best line-up, if you ask me.. with bryan gregory on 2nd guitar and human metronome, nick knox on drums.
if you are unfamiliar with him - he was like a human frankenstein monster on stage... and in later years, a human frankenstein / human fly in women's clothes... like if ed wood wanted to be elvis from hell.
brilliant
I did see them, in the early Eighties. And they were everything you said. Their right to change any lyric they care to is absolute - I was just wondering why they'd choose one of the most slyly lewd lines that rock and roll has ever known....
i guess its the "psycho" part of psychobilly? taking the "jailhouse" aspect all the way to its most shocking (pun intended) degree? or at least to the ultimate part of the jailhouse + chair formula...
Used to go see The Cramps at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver every chance I got. Boy, do I miss those carefree days. I like this version better than the original.
Most excellent cover from a wonderfully warped band!
Usually when Jeff says "someone will hate it" he means me.
But he likes it. Marky likes it.
For some odd reason, Shonen Knife's version of The Carpenters' "Top of the World" came to mind. Given the choice between Punk and Psychobilly, "Let's Rock!"
*bummer* was hoping to hear this version...
What version?
The cramps.. the song is gone....
