THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

TIMES I FIND THINGS HARD TO SAY, WITH USELESS WORDS GETTING IN THE WAY. SILENCE OFTEN SAYS MUCH MORE THAN TRYIN' TO SAY WHAT'S BEEN SAID BEFORE. (Don't be pu off by the title of the track, just listen to George gently rock your soul)

George Harrison's lyrics were often profound in their stark simplicity.Often perceived as the silent, mystic, mysterious Beatle, and yet his lyrics were far more direct and "on the surface" than Lennon's or McCartney's.**Don't come around, leave me alone, don't bother me**Just about says it all, no?Paul McCartney always loved the limelight. Lennon manipulated it, showed us shadow puppets and his dick.George +hated+ the spotlight. +Hated+ the loss of freedom, the fishbowl existence that was his lot as a Beatle for 15 years. He valued tranquility and peace, music, and later in life, family.Oh this? You got me. Just a photo I thought was cool.We are living in the Material World.

  1. Spike says Right now I can't think of anything to say that hasn't been said before. Harrison's track is one of his good ones. I'm glad she's not living in the material world, even though parts of her are beautiful.

  2. Bartleby says I find these lines particularly true: "We all move around, with objectives in mind, to become rich or famous, With our reputations signed, But the few that can reach, to this coveted slot, don't escape old age creeping, through their bodies, like a rot."

  3. Spike says A true poet, but who? Good choice. One of Mog's services is getting us to focus our thoughts and feelings until we can put them into eloquent form, but often life doesn't offer us the time for such a luxury.

  4. ZZTodd says you're right about george. i think it's sad that john and paul didn't take him very seriously as a songwriter, despite the few wonderful songs he was able to contribute on Abbey Road and such.

  6. dermahrk says Of course, John also showed us his ass and Yoko's not-so-fun bags, which were around her navel in the 60's - they must be draggin' on the floor by now. An early subscriber to Rolling Stone, the only two issues I saved are the nude Lennon/Ono pix and Lennon interviews.

  7. deadmandeadman says You know Mark, I have those two issues as well. Also about 30 copypaper boxes of old R.S.s until about the late eighties. Why would I save that shit? Who knows, I'm an incurable pack-rat. Rolling Stone, Crawdaddy, and a host of others too numerous to mention stacked and boxed all over the place. As to Lennon's antics in his late twenties/early thirties; YEAH! Challenging convention at every turn, he successfully forged a new identity for himself. Sure he was naive, superficial, silly, provocative and all the other labels you may wish to plaster him with, Christ, he as much as admitted it... "It's a con, man. We know its a con, the audience _knows_ its a con, man, **they wanna be conned**. Along the way he created some incredible music, some mediocre music, and some dross. No artist succeeds everytime. George's reclusive nature drove Lennon nuts for many years, but in the end I think he'd discovered the wisdom of George's decision and was tryin' for a compromise, 'cause he needed the validation, the recognition in ways that George did not.

  8. mktackabery says As I get older I find more meaning in George's stuff than the others. As the Beatles went, so went a lot of things. The Beatles in their public personas are like classic archetypes in a lot of ways. I had never heard this song before, but you are dead on about his lyrics as compared to L&M. The simplest things are the most profound and true, in the end. May he live forever.

  9. dermahrk says Rolling Stone from the late 80s? I can think of no more appropriate term than "shit".
