WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN(well Duh!)

Posted about 1 year ago
In the news these last couple of days I read of a little girl who won a contest for choice Hannah Montana tickets. She won with an essay which detailed how her father had been killed in Iraq, among other things, and that life was rough. It turns out the girl of eight(?) conspired with her mom to fabricate the whole thing. The Mom, defiant to the end, said "We did what we had to do to win". (or words to that effect). If that doesn't depress you, give the track a listen."Caroline Says II", from Lou Reed's epic burned-to-ashes masterpiece, **BERLIN**. A cd so depressing yet so fscinating, repulsive yet seductive, a junkie's cottoball wrapped around razor blades.

  1. scotfree says You know, everytime I go to post something about this recording, by the time I'm trying to pick out a track I'm too depressed to remember or care what I was trying to do. Seriously though, this may well be the high point of Lou's contribution to the art of humanity. His descriptions and conveyance of these emotions are something every domestic abuse violator should be made to sit and listen to, until the tears of regret are genuine and painful. Thanks for shining a light on the holiday Jeff! Happy new year to you and yours

  2. ivylander says Jeez, happy new year to you too, guy..... Cirrusly, I have loved Berlin from the day it came out - bought it on the Friday of its release, got ridiculously stoned with my friend Roscoe and played it twice through, then played two fraternity gigs in one night with my band (social from 5:30-7:30, mixer 9:30-1:30 down the street) featuring some of the most vicious bass guitar of my justly uncelebrated career.... The Hannah Montana thing....there's only winning, man. Scruples are for also-rans.....

  4. Bartleby says Teach your children indeed - though I'll somehow reluctant to put Lou's "Berlin" in my offspring's ears. There's nothing I could say that hasn't been more eloquently said by my predecessors. Though I love this album in even in its sickening chords, I know some people who just consider "sick" in its desolate grimness and won't listen to it at all - except for the initial listen of course.

  7. moheganer3 says Thanks for a great post.I have always been a big Lou fan and this was a great if underappreciated album. He did this entire Berlin album live a year or two ago in Brooklyn-I was able to download a copy and he did a great job with it.

  8. BerkeleyBob says Carolyn says II is heartbreaking, recently listened to Berlin on vinyl. Mr. Reed may be as grumpy a git as Van the Man, but he is a major artist. I know he has been touring and performing Berlin recently, isn't there a DVD or a remastered and reissue out? BerkBob
