Levon Helm is back. This is a very good thing. Levon's resume is as impressive as any in rock, and his distinctive voice helped breathe life into so many of Robbie Robertson's lyrics. Other versions of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down are nice, but in Levon, Virgil Kane comes alive, breathes, slogs through the mud and the moral confusion central to the song. And Levon brings this 'everyman' quality to so many tracks through the years, with The Band and without. In 1998 he underwent throat surgery and it was far from certain that he'd ever sing again. But here he is, with his first full cd since. And what a cd! For fans of Americana this is a treasure chest of old folk songs, ballads, and touches of country style gospel. With Daughter Amy and Teresa Williams on Harmony Vocals, Larry Campbell on guitars and fiddle, and Levon on Drums, mandolin, and guitar, the sound is rich and warm, sparkling yet spare, allowing the beauty of the lyrics and the singing to take center stage.Highly recommended! This track is of a song Levon learned, with Michael Copus, while in appalachia(?) filming the Dollmaker.
