The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is an American Classic now. The Band's Potrait of the southern dirt farmer and his shattered post civil war lament has become part of the Great American Songbook.Big Country recorded this track in 1994 with guest volcalists Kim Mazelle, Carol Laula & Steve Harley.ENJOY?

  1. dermahrk says I'm very impressed by this. It's hard to cover tunes by the Band and not sound weak by comparison (i.e. Joan Baez on this same song), but they do an admirable job and add their own flavor. Aren't they British or Irish? They sure sound American here.

  2. ivylander says The band's great, the arrangement is excellent. My stumbling block is the singer. It's just one of thoes voices that, for no explicable reason, annoys the heck out of me....

  3. Cinful says I partially agree with Ivy ... I enjoyed the song until each time the chorus came up ... then, well, yeah ... ick!

  4. brendanhalpin says I like it! Too bad about Stuart Adamson. It must've been not too long after this that he killed himself, right? I seem to remember it was in the mid to late 90's, but maybe I'm wrong.
