Well I guess its no secret that I like/hate covers. I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame, and yet....I usually prefer the originals. So here's one, a blast from the past. They started out as Terry Knight & The Pack, and went nowhere. Terry Knight drpped out of the band and took up the managerial role. He changed their name to Grand Funk Railroad and the rest is history.Reviled by critics in their day. They were none-the-less massively popular with 18-28 year old (white) males. Their style was marked by heavy plodding beats, screeching guitar solosand good-time lyrics. There concerts were testosterome driven affairs with fists thrust into the air all night long. But all good things got to come to and end and so did this. A fight with their manager resulted in them not being able to call themselves Grand Funk Railroad. So they reemerged as just Grand Funk, and sputtered on for a few more albums.Along the way they roped in Todd Rundgren to produce an album or two and came up with two of their biggest hits."we're An American Band" and this one, a song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and sung by their babysitter whom they dubbed "Little Eva", the "Locomotion"

  4. asrati says Sounds like it coulda been a Rundgren B-side, fer sure, with a simple swap-out of the lead vocals, which sound strangely like Todd's keening, full-throated rock mode anyway. (Todd's "You Cried Wolf" comes to mind.) I bet a nickle he's doing most of the background vocals. I like both versions fine.

  5. dermahrk says Yup, the babysitter kicks GFR in their testosterone (with an "N"!) fer sure. But it's hard to kill a good song, and their version is ok.

...believe it or not...I had both the Grand Funk Railroad and Barbra Streisand 45s.

I even remember the flip side to Babs - "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?"...I can't recall the flip side to "Locomotion" from Grand Funk.

  13. deadmandeadman says Well, I surely do not know either. I was one of those who detested Grand Funk. They are better in retrospect.

  16. drewg says Never a Grand Funk fan, but one song that stuck in me head is Heartbreaker, though I haven't heard it since i was a kid. It's got those Runaway/Like A Hurricane/One More Cup Of Coffee chords, so how could they go wrong?

  17. TylerDurden says thanks for the throw back....I almost went insane without my daily upload of GFR, without the funk, you would just have a big train track, know what I mean.... Jack's integral intravenous injection, Tyler Durden
