Boo! (humbug!)

Posted over 4 years ago
Call me a stick in the mud but I do not like halloween anymore. All the poor little children in cookie-cutter costumes bein' dragged from house to house shouting the implied threat of Trick Or Treat just doesn't warm my soul.I Know there are many out there who go way out of their way to create something special for their own children and for the children of the neighborhood, and that's great. But for the majority its an ....unpleasant thing.

  3. scotfree says I think you may be looking at this all wrong. It's supposed to be soul chilling. In our neighborhood, it's a chance for the adults to mingle with mixed drinks in hand while handing out the sweets to the kids. give that method a shot.

  4. consumerx says I'd agree there's plenty of lame-o's out there that operate on the program you describe, but there are still some folks that make it one of my favorite events. Just the other day, I saw twenty hipsters studiously practicing the dance moves of the Thriller video for what should be a fun group costume (I saw it two years ago and was very impressed). I can't say I'll be too active this year (more on the Dia de los Muertes tip), but I have many fond memories of trick or treating as a kid in homemade costumes and visiting houses where the habitants put on some awesome Halloween displays - flamin' pumpkins, haunted houses, gore and general fun. As an adult back on the East Coast my buds and I put on a haunted house for several years. Some incredible fun. People traveled from all over the city to check us out and giving some of the kids a little fright was priceless. Oh, I like the track too.

  5. ivylander says I agree. Halloween is not a transaction. Neither is Christmas.

  6. jameson says Oh, I wholeheartedly agree too. It's become the 4th largest cash-cow holiday in the US and it's ludicrous.

  7. ivylander says Scotfree, that's our MO too. Everybody travels in packs, the dads maintain a respectful distance from the kids, from time to time along the way us chaperones get palmed with a brew. Now that's what I call fellowship....

  9. asrati says It's been eons since I've had first-hand contact with trick or treaters. As a serial urban apartment dweller, I just don't get the holiday brought to my door. In my brand new urban neighborhood, the kids don't beg for candy at residences -- apparently it's established that the free candy is to be found within the stores along the local shopping strip. I took a walk tonight while it was all transpiring. Only one store I saw had a sign taped to their door reading "Sorry - No Candy". Although -- the 99 cent store I shop at no less than once a week just plain closed for the evening. The owner is a real curmudgeon, and I'm not surprised he had no intention of putting up with the situation.

  10. dermahrk says Much too much of a misanthrope to enjoy the trick-or-treat experience. I was thrilled last night to be safely ensconced in a hotel room with no indication that Halloween was going on.

  11. chucky says Heh. 90% of the little girls in our neighborhood were fairies this year. Le sigh. But, the identical costumes and the bad manners won't destroy Halloween for me. Bah! heh.
