NOT a Cover. But an over looked little gem from The Lovin' Spoonful (This Goes Out To Rhode Eye)

The Lovin' Spoonful had a handful of hits in their day, but they had their share of over looked gems like this one. One doesn't have to listen too closely to hear Mr Dylan's influence here.

The Spoonful LPs (while Zal was still on board) were chock-full of great tracks, this being one. Definitely an under-appreciated American band.
You got that right!
This provokes a big smile! One of the many charms of this song is the internal rhymes. Nice all around. I didn't get to see them live at the time, but cought John Sebastian a couple times and met him once. He did a consomate one-man-show and was generous in illuminating his musical roots for the audience.
"Jug Band Music" is one of my favorites. Here's a quiz: guess which Lovin' Spoonful song this track, "Prison Wall Blues" (1930), Cannon's Jug Stompers last pre-Sixties recording, with Hosea Woods singing, inspired? I don't remember reading about this link, so maybe I noticed it on my own.
...Oh man,...I'm listenin'.....it cannot be a coincidence, huh?
Does that mean you know the answer?
Well, I thought it did...But The spoonful only had a handful of usable tunes they'd recycle. I thought your track sounded a lot like my track, "jug Band Music". But something else is itching in the back of my mammories.
I don't want to torture you, but if I tell you the answer, which is not obscure, you'll go "Doh!"
Let me play it a few more times....
I'VE GOT IT! You didn't say not to blurt it out, so here goes:
YOUNGER GIRL!
PS: In Pittsburgh, Sebastian told the audience how he had gone to hear blues players when he was young and how he would play a tune by Howlin' Wolf (as I recall) and slow it down, then give it a rockin' chair rhythm and it was Daydream. Really nice.
Just listening to this song a little more, I love these lyrics!
Yeah, Spike 1, an imaginative wry lyric really drives this song.
Spike, Is Spike 1 correct? Younger Girl? ( I'm still guessing)

You guessed it, Spike 1! Sebastian used only part of their melody.
Yesss! I seldom win anything. Especially if it involves memory. Once at a Christine Lavin concert my wife encouraged me to raise my hand when she asked for volunteers to sing back up for the Sensitive New-Age Guy. What I didn't know was that before you get to sing, she humiliates you by making you answer trivia questions about movies. I was really clueless!
One of my old faves is Sebastian's 1971 album The Four of Us. It was a friend to me during a rough time in my life. It's a road-trip story that concludes, "Every lover, keep your driver on the road and laughin'."
I just read that, in 1968, Sebastian turned down the offer to form a group with his friends Crosby, Stills and Nash. Who knew?
I wonder why her turned it down. Wrong coast?
