THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

I SHARE A DISLIKE FOR THE SUC ACRONYM AND I"LL NOT USE IT. WHEN SPOKEN, SUNDAY UNDER COVERS SOUNDS SO MUCH MORE INVITING.

'Mississippi' John Hurt stepped into the studio in 1928 to record some 28 "sides" for Okeh records and secured his place in the pantheon of blues legends. His quiet delivery and finger picking style were 'new' sounds for blues audiences across the rural south. He's credited with the earliest recording of this old blues number, though variations on the theme abound.Chris Smither is a Singer/Songwriter/troubadour of uncommon skill, he does a nice job with this track, infusing it with some of John Hurt's sly innocence, and a tinge of sadness. He's a fair-to-middlin' guitar player as well so its all good to me.What do you think?

  1. scotfree says You know, I thought that after I posted the Yuki cover. Did not mean to offend. I, as well, shall adopt this ruling.

  4. Spike says Mississippi John Hurt and many of the black blues musicians from olden times played lots of types of music besides blues, but the record labels forced them to play only their own blues, partly because the labels could save money on composers' royalties. This was true even in the 60's when they were re-discovered by the folk craze and blues was considered more authentic than old pop ditties. After a while, in the sixties, Hurt finally started being called a "songster." Chris Smither is great, _and_ he sometimes writes his own songs. What he does with "Candy Man" here is nice. The first guy to figure out how to play Hurt's version of Frankie and Johnny (maybe the oldest blues song) was Mike Seeger on his first album, from 1962. In the 70's I heard Jesse Colin Young perform an even more evolved variation on this.

  6. HelenMarie says Can I share something in regards to the acronym topic. This all kind of flows, slightly. There was talk of Faith Hill (Sunday night football intro) in my home last night. I really don't care for her, since she seems to be, ever so, *S*elf *A*bsorbed and some of the volger fellas in the house wanted to add another adjective (well adjective or noun, humm?) which starts with the letter *C* and rhymes with blunt. Needless to say, I don't care for that word... so I said "let's just call a woman like that a *SAC*. In that case I like the acronym better, but in the cover case I'm inclined to be more wordy. Agreed. Oh and really enjoyed the tracks!

  8. dermahrk says Is this the same song that Sammy Davis Jr. turned into garbage?
