WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

A Merry Young Soul

I have long liked this song. Nat King Cole's trio was one of the high-points of American music. He would later scale greater commercial heights, I find his music of this era to be the most honest presentation of his vision. The silky smooth vocals of course, but the music! Ah the music!Tight, cool, & adventurous, like a well aged scotch, their communication sometimes bordered on telepathic. Nat's piano often took center stage, but not always. A very very young deadmandeadman fell in love with the guitar on this track, and has come back to it through the years for the smile.I do not argue the virtuosity of the playing from a technical standpoint, though it is impressive, just the overall ambience of the sound and how it completes the whole picture, locking evrything in place.

  1. Cody B says I was in a bar in Chicago one night about 3 in the morning or so and I met a jazz pianist (can't remeber the name) who had been a session cat for over 50 years. He swore up and down that Nat King Cole was the best player he ever saw. Anyway..love this tune and all the trio stuff.

  8. dermahrk says Thanks a lot. I love Nat's voice, and own a double LP of his hits, but so many have such syrupy arrangements that they are undigestable. I've heard about his jazz band days and wondered if that would be more palatable, and you've just proven that it is.
