I NEED A FIX 'CAUSE I'M GOIN' DOWN (Sunday Covers)

Posted about 1 year ago
There doesn't seem to be any middle ground on this one. Some absolutely love it, some detest it. I like the minimalist take but the vocal seems too cool/detached.Pod was the debut of The Breeders. Kim Deal (of the Pixies) and Tanya Donnelly (of Throwing Muses) were feeling somewhat stifled in their respective bands and wanted to branch out. They formed the Breeders almost as a goof but soon discovered they had a real chemistry.Though they never made the 'big time' they DO have a sizable cult following to this day.

  2. dermahrk says I'm surprised to say I'm on the positive side of the fence on this one. It probably helps that it is not, IMHO, a superior Lennon track to begin with, thus leaving a lot of room for improvement. Plus...No Yoko! Always a big plus....

  3. scotfree says That's alrighty, it's a good cover anywayz. Hey, in one of my close brushes with fame, Breeder drummer Jim MacPherson lives in a house I used to own. He bought it once removed from our occupancy, and shocked the small town realtor by plunking down the cash purchase amount. It's a beautiful two story brick that was built as a church in 1890, and remodled in the 1920s. I've spoke to him a few times, seems like a great guy!

  11. Spike says This version's new to me. You're right about the (Breeders'?) vocal seeming too cool/detached, at least at the end after the "Mother Superior jumped the gun" part. As everyone knows, starting "with four bars of common time, the first section changes key for and eight-and-three-quarter bar passage (1 x 4/4, 1 x 2/4, 6 x 4/4, 1 x 1/4, 1 x 4/4), before moving to the second section: twice around ten bars in 3/8 (grouped as 3 + 4 + 3) with the extra complication of a rising two-bar bass phrase in canon with the vocal. After one tacit bar, the third section arrives: thrice around a highly unstable structure analysable as 1 x 6/8, 1 x 8/8, 1 x 4/8, 1 x 6/8, 1 x 8/8, 1 x 6/8. The closing section consists of four bars of 4/4, twelve of 3/8 (with the drums continuing in 4/4!), four of 4/4, and out-of-tempo pause on F minor, and five final bars of 4/4," as Ian MacDonald puts in _Revolution in the Head_. I read somewhere that this was Lennon's favorite track from the White Album; his having written it probably had something to do with that. It's good to finally see your well-chiseled cheek bones.
