Leon Redbone at Chan's

Posted over 4 years ago
boo!Leon Redbone having a laugh or three after the showGeeze, it looked fine last night! But it was a very cool night.Leon likes this intimate little room and last night he had an audience that was responsive, respectful and appreciative. As a result we were treated to an extra long set, complete with his stories, puns, witty asides, and assorted twisted bon mots. And he sang Polly Wolly Doodle! I've seen him five times now and that's the first time he sang it. Man he kills that thing. Accompanied by a horn player(and I'm not sure what kind of horn it was, it seemed to have as many loops as a french horn but much smaller) and a piano player he covered the gamut from Blind Boy Fuller to Ira Girshwin.Yeah, I know my picture taking skills (W/digital) are a work in progress. But I had fun.To the left, Duke Robillard. To the right one of my partners in crime.Bobby Farrelly was there also.If you ever get the chance to see Leon Redbone don't let the chance slip by.

  1. Spike says I wish I had been there. The excerpt of "Polly" sounds great. When will we see your mug (with flesh and skin)?

  3. ivylander says You're makin' me nostalgic for Woonsocket, man. No joke. Sounds like a highly memorable evening - kinda like your highly memorable camera technique.....

  4. dermahrk says I second that emotion! Leon is a fabulous performer. Seeing him live forced me into buying two or three of his CDs which, I am sorry to say, could not match the brilliance of him live.

  5. dermahrk says Woonsocket? Way too obscure for me, even for you, Ivylander.... :-)

  6. ivylander says Not that obscure, really. Chan's is in Woonsocket, RI, just down the road from our faithful correspondent. Several years ago - before I had made Deadman's acquaintance, alas - my former journalistic career brought me to Woonsocket for several days. The experience was, in fact, one of the main reasons I left journalism. (Jes kiddin', Jeff.)

  7. dermahrk says Rhode Island wins the dermahrk award for weirdest city names. Pascoag? Woonsocket? How did they pick their city names? Put a group of chimps in a room with typewriters?

  8. ivylander says It was the Nairobi Trio's side gig.

  9. deadmandeadman says Yeah dermahrk you're right. Once when I was in Pennsylvania, drving from Blue Balls to Intercourse I wondered aloud to myself 'Why can't we have cool names like that?'

  10. HelenMarie says Blues Balls and Intercourse are all over the country, there's actually quite a few here in Florida! *: ()* Haha. I have to say though dermahrk might win the award for weirdest screenname...what is a dermahrk anyhow? That "intimate little room" seems to have the ambiance I love (the large artwork and lighting can make or break the feeling) and especially nice to see an admired artist in such an intimate setting. Good times.

  11. Anna says Looks like a fun night! "Yeah, I know my picture taking skills (W/digital) are a work in progress". C'mon, Jeff, I say the same thing every time I take pics while being drunk. We're not buying it!

  16. smacn27076 says I've been a fan of Leon since about '93, but have never caught him live. He'll be playing at nearby Big Bend Community College (Mose Lake, WA) in April... can't wait to see him. Thanks for the advance review! SMac
