YAY! SUNDAY COVERS AGAIN! (D'oh)!) (There's A Good Guru)

Donovan Leitch was one of the first of the 'new Dylans' to emerge in the master's wake. His "Catch The Wind" seemed to be a reply to Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind", and his recording of Buffy Ste Marie's "Universal Soldier" further cemented his reputation as a new 'spokesman for a generation'.His sound developed and blossomed in the emerging psychedelic scene, and with Jimmy Page on guitar he turned in one of the genre's pop masterpieces "Hurdy Gurdy Man".I had always assumed that the tremelo in Donovan's voice, Particularly on "H. G. M". was the result of some studio trickery, but I guess I was wrong. This Live acoustic track features a delightful little Beatle tale and is quite a neat gem.Listen and see if his little anecdote doesn't precisely nail Lennon"s personality.

  2. dermahrk says Donovan was, of course, no Dylan (for which he got ribbed unmercifully in "Don't Look Back"), but he produced a hell of a lot of good music in the 1960s. I have all of his early folky stuff, as well as the psychedelic Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow and the Hurdy Gurdy album. But when I spent a lot of minimum-wage money for "Gift From a Flower to A Garden", a double-LP set that was crapalicious, our relationship ended. He has returned to recording these days, but the tracks I've sampled are not very good. Still, I love that early stuff. Thanks, DMDM!

  3. deadmandeadman says You know PIMP, I'd heard that there were folks out there who didn't know, but I'd assumed it was another urban legend. Mark, I like a lot of Donavan's music, but he was spoonfed so he'd feel more assured, then they killed him with self confidence after poisoning him with words.

  5. deadmandeadman says Well all that may or may not be so, I cannot say difinitively and I say this without malice, bile, or insult, but I really do not care enough to dig that far. (right now). All I know is I like Hurdy Gurdy Man. Donovan's OK too. Pimp you're a hot shit! While you're diggin' around, can you find me the song title and artist for a mid-seventies song (british I think) with a brief refrain that goes .."You'd better ride on baby, you were born outside of the law"? I don't know where to go to find such things.
