Music Invoked Nostalgia

Posted over 5 years ago
Isn't it a shame how some music can be ruined by the events in your life. I'm not sure if everyone has experienced this or not, but I have to assume so. Cibo Matto is a great band, and one of their albums "Stereotype A" has been completely ruined for me. I was listening to this album a lot during a particularly rough patch in my life (lots of uncertainty, in a bad relationship, no real direction, etc...). Now whenever I listen to this album, or if a song from the album comes up on random in iTunes, I have this overwhelming sense of melancholy and unsettled feeling wash over me. It's kind of depressing. Not only that I'll randomly get thrown into a funk when a song from that album comes on, but also that the entire album is forever ruined. Well, I'm not sure if it's forever ruined yet, I'll have to check back with it in 50 years or so and see. It's at least been ruined for the last 5 years. Anyone else have an album like that?

Hm, when Jill Scott's first record came out I was dating this kid and, on his recommendation, I bought it. Before I had a chance to listen to it, we parted ways on very ugly circumstances and to this day I have never listened to that record...because _he_ suggested it. Hell, even seeing the cd's cover in a magazine or store brings me back there, so...yah, I feel your pain.

  3. lemontwist says Yeah, sure, a couple songs remind me of people and/or events that I'd rather forget. But after reintroducing the music back into my everyday playlist, the songs will gain a new meaning eventually, and the pain behind them will eventually subside.

  4. kingkongreggae says Fortunately, I don't have any tunes that evoke such bad memories that it prevents me from listening to them. Music has an almost magical quality to trigger memories, though, almost as much as smell can trigger hidden memories. I have had the opposite experience, though, and have taken solace in music during rough times. One particular time, I found the music quite liberating. I can still remember the songs from that time: dada's "Feel Me" - "don't you fucking touch me", belted out at the top of my lungs, Nillson's "You're Breaking my Heart" - "You're breaking my heart, you're tearing it apart, so fuck you", Todd Rundgren's "Flaw" - "You could be my everything...but you've got one fatal flaw...so why'd you have to be such a lying ass mother fucker", Joydrop's "Spiders" - "touch me now and every single hair on my body stands on end, so don't touch me anymore, 'cause it feels like spiders all over me", Veruca Salt's "Only You Know" -- "don't blame me for sinking the ship. You're a hopeless liar and a hypocrite", and Bloodhound Gang's "I Hope You Die". Uplifting stuff, huh ? But it was very liberating, and helped me to deal with the pain. It's very sad to hear that you have bad feelings about Stereotype A. I can't imagine anything but grins coming from "Sci Fi Wasabi" - "tech-i-nic-a-ly I'm free, but I don't have a key...Obie Wan Kenobe is waiting for me..." Hopefully someday you can groove to the manic horns at the end of "Lint of Love". Stereotype A happens to be one of my all-time favorite albums.
