Butterfly Boucher

Posted over 5 years ago
I haven't written anything in quite awhile, so I just decided to pick an artist from my list of artists I like that no one has ever mentioned.First off, no, there is no relation. Butterfly is from the other side of the world and pronounces her name wrong. haha.I first saw and heard of Butterfly Boucher a little over a year ago now. She was the opening act for Sarah McLachlan on her Afterglow tour. Let me start by saying, I don't generally enjoy opening acts. Maybe it's because they were restricted on how they could set up their equipment, maybe it's that the sound is optimized for the main act, I don't know. I also don't like hearing new bands for the first time live. So when Butterfly Boucher took the stage I was doubly surprised. There was something about her I just instantly liked. She came across as a very likable person and I greatly enjoyed her music. Despite the fact she only had one album under her belt I didn't think she played a weak song in her whole 40-45 min set. So when she announced she'd be selling autographed copies of her album, I of course left to get my copy. I even missed Sarah's first song when I returned. There's a great story about her debut album, Flutteryby at The Village Voice ."[Liz] Phair told Spin a couple of months ago that Flutterby, the debut by 24-year-old Australian Butterfly Boucher, changed her life, or at least the portion of it since Flutterby was released to the plaudits of Boucher's webmaster in February."I'm terrible at describing music, but this is basically adult alternative pop/rock. AllMusic lists some similar artists as Michelle Branch, Alanis Morissette and Liz Phair. However it doesn't have the angst of Morissette or earlier Phair. It's lively and and playful to borrow from AllMusic's "moods" listing. If you are curious she has four of her songs on her MySpace page.

  1. Spencer Owen says I'm guessing she pronounces her name "Booshay" - that's not how you pronounce yours? How do you pronounce yours?

  2. dbboucher says Booshay is the "correct" way to pronounce it. It's the French way, or at least close. She pronounces it 'bow-cher'. I'm sure she's had a lot of issues with people pronouncing her name "wrong" as have I. However, when she played bi-lingual Ottawa she was in front of an audience where Boucher is a fairly common name. She started by saying, "You're probably wondering how to pronounce my name", to which a lot of people probably were thinking, "no not really'. Then she proceeded to pronounce an anglicized version of the name. However, she was adorable anyway...

  3. Spencer Owen says Oh, yeah. "Bowcher" sounds way wrong. Strange.

  4. Manos says I love "A Beautiful Book". Is it a good representation of the whole album?

  5. dbboucher says I don't remember that one by name, and I don't have it loaded on my 4GB iPod today. Life is short I Can't Make Me Another White Dash are pretty representative of the album and they're available on her MySpace page. I can check the song you mention later tonight. To be honest, I liked most of the album anyway...

  6. dbboucher says Stupid me, I got a snippet of "A Beautiful Book" from AllMusic, and yes I would say it is representative. If you're still hesitant, check out some of the others on MySpace. There are still even more goodies on the album. It's a fun pop/rock album.

  8. Torch says I'll have to check it out. And BTW - Welcome back globetrotter!!

  9. dbboucher says Oops, that’s a lot of pressure. I think people who like the rock artists I have listed, or at least are open to the style, could really enjoy Butterfly Boucher. That doesn’t mean everyone will. If you want personalized recommendations I could probably have a higher hit rate! 90s Alt-rock seems to work great with you AJ, and I know Torch loves the alt-country. That’s why we have each other listed so high on our trusted mogs list. We had a Shannon McNally/Hem exchange. :)

  12. Torch says I was wondering what might have lead you to believe I'm into Alt-country in a big way (lol). But then again, I did just rip my Shania Twain CD...

  13. dbboucher says I saw that. Although that's more contemporary country.
