go see shine a light
perhaps you're apprehensive because you think their days are done and it might be boring. HAHAHAHAHAH. that they're just a bunch of old guys playing songs they wrote 20 years ago. i'm here to tell you: EL-WRONG-O. the stones simply tear in up in this movie. it's totally a mind-blowing thing to behold
my take away: the stones in this movie embody "perseverance" and "drive" - about having a fire inside that burns so hard you refuse to let any preconceived notions of what it's supposed to be like to "grow up" take hold. it's also about being pure and true to yourself, all the while engaging in the utmost fun because you live for what you do. to me the stones are not about selling out - sorry. they've got more money than god at this point to do what they do. it's clear from the film that they're out there because they have to be.
i walked out so ridiculously inspired. reminded me why i created and work on mog every day: to help carry that torch of rebellion, authenticity and musical truth, amidst so much friggin' schlock and noise.
the fact that they're still making this racket and giving you this show of shows, the likes of which emulators like aerosmith can't come close, reinforces why they are the greatest rock and roll band that's ever been and probably ever will be. they're a special force on this planet that refuses to dim. i've said it before and i'll say it again: when it comes to "rock and roll", it's the stones, hands down.
if you think they're "past their prime" and that keeps you from seeing this movie, you are truly missing one of the best live concert flicks put to film. especially if you miss it in IMAX RIGHT NOW WHEN YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. i defy you to see it and not say they put bands 1/4 of their age to complete shame.
okay. sorry. i'm done gushing and rambling now. thank you scorcese, mick, keith, ron, charlie.
p.s.psyched for jay-z live tonight in oakland!!!!

After all that gushing, I guess I have to see it!! :)
When they played here in Boise, I couldn't afford the tickets; but a coworker went with her husband and told me their performance was more than she ever expected. In retrospect, I guess I should've sold my son for a couple tickets??!! LOL

Hey, David? I need Monday afternoon off for, uh, er, a doctor's appointment.
My Trusted MOGs
Nice one! Glad to hear it's good.
My Trusted MOGs
tjay, you are looking a bit pale.
My Trusted MOGs

the section in the movie when its just Keith at the mic - no guitar - singing "You Got the Silver" is the most brilliant thing I've seen the Stones do EVER... and i've seen them on just about every tour they've done since 1975, and i've seen all the movies of their tours and shows.
buddy guy does sweep the floor with jagger though... but i give the stones props for letting him do it... and for keith INSISTING that guy keep that guitar he gave him... and for scorsese for keeping that part in
the camera operators are all fine DPs in their own right (like emmanuel lubezki who shot "sleepy hollow" and ellen kuras who is one of the few lady DPs in the ASC - a true master, she is) and the editor, david tedeschi knows how to edit rock n roll stuff - possibly because he's so awed by it.
my only complaint is that there is WAY TOO MUCH JAGGER. there are 3 other Rolling Stones in that band....

Mike The Knife wrote a post about the movie & it looked good from the clip he posted. I'm not that much of a fan although I do enjoy their music when I hear & it's so steeped into our culture that you can't escape it. They are icons for sure but I'm going to wait for it to come out on vid. Glad you enjoyed it so much.

i think you will really miss a lot if you see it on the small screen.
my biz is film & video and there's plenty of movies where the screen doesn't matter...
this definitely benefits from IMAX.... maybe someone will treat you to it!

Saw "Shine A Light" yesterday with my 15 year old daughter. We both loved it! Although she grew up hearing Stones music in our home, she was seriously impressed with the energy and top form those "old guys" bring to their performance.
I have to admit that I had tempered my expectations thinking that they couldn't possibly deliver as good a show as they did the last time I saw them live...god, it's been over twenty years! Well, they did, they do and I'm sure they will keep blowing roofs off shows for years to come.
Besides the amazing Stones and their always killer backline, Buddy Guy just blew me back in my seat. Like Ana log says, he upstaged Jagger in a big way and the Stones just moved back and gave him the room. I right there with Ana also on the best part of the film being Keith out front singing "You Got The Silver."
Everyone's always wondering how Keith Richards is still alive and going after all he's done and how hard he's lived. Well I think you'll see the answer if you just watch the man while he's doing his thing. He just flat out loves what he does.

Anna Log, I agree there are definitely movies that are much better on the big screen, like anything by Tim Burton(who I adore), but also concert films. I wouldn't mind seeing this on the big screen but not into them enough to warrant the price of the ticket. There are so many other bands & movies I'd prefer to spend my dollar on anyway. But if someone offered to pay my way I certainly wouldn't refuse!

Chrissie Hynde was on the radio a few years ago right after she had toured with the Stones. She kept talking about the way they used to spend ages doing soundchecks just mucking about with songs. 'Those guys just love to play' was her final comment. I've heard the soundtrack in the record store and it really turned me off. But Ana's 'review' has changed my mind. And Mr. D's of course - wouldn't want to be el-wrong-o.

If you want to see what I prefer to call the Jagger-Richards Band featuring Mr. Charlie Watts on drums perform classic Rolling Stones songs including "You Got the Silver" (which I called one of the "most emotional, real moments" in the film), it's an impressive display of sexagenarian energy, rock and roll prowess, and more than worth your time. But they are way past their prime.

i saw the movie on saturday, in NY, in IMAX, and it blew me away, felt like I was actually at a stones show. couple of observations:
1) These guys work their asses off onstage, they havent slowed down at all.
2) Cristina Aguilera continues to demonstrate that she has one speed - over the top. She screeches her way thru "Live with Me" with no feel and no musicianship. Part of being a musician is understanding dynamics so your performance is in context. All she seems capable of is putting in a "look at how good I can yell, look at my high notes" performance. She's fucking awful in the film.
3) Buddy Guy is amazing in this movie - SO real. His vocals and guitar playing are like historic artifacts from a time when talent & feel were a requirement to being a respected musician.
4) Unfortunately, Keith Richards really disappointed me with just awful guitar playing. I love Keef and have tons of Stones bootlegs from years past. In this movie, he just seems out of step with the rest of the band, playing sloppy and off time. If you have seen the DVD "A Bigger Bang" then you'll know what I mean, although Ron Wood seems to be playing much better since he cleaned up a bit. Keef was never an amazing guitar player technically but he always played tasty; seems he can't really do that anymore.
5) Charlie Watts is rock solid AND he swings. Gotta love Charlie.
6) Mick doesnt really sing anymore, he kind of raps. His "singing" has no recognizable melody, thank God we all know the songs so it's kind of like your mind fills in the missing parts. But he moves about 75% as well as he ever did, which to me is mind boggling.
Still, it was a great movie, glad these guys are still playing. Enjoyed it immensely.

I couldn't have said it better myself Mr. Hyman! I saw this movie last night and it was great!!
My Trusted MOGs
ebuzz, shud, great minds think alike. : )
My Trusted MOGs
Saw the movie, didn't have found anything new, can't say i really liked it, still i like these old Rolling Stones songs (sympathy for the level :)))))
On the other hand they are still here and rockin' such as many a today's band shall do if only they could... Old : OK, not very creative nowadays : OK as well, it's only r'n'r : OK too but still... i like it.
My Trusted MOGs
buddy guy was incredible, man, he just opens his mouth and the power was massive
unfortunately, my friend got sick because we sat too close and a 30 foot jagger was just too much for her fragile equilibrium ;)

"perhaps you're apprehensive because you think their days are done and it might be boring. HAHAHAHAHAH . that they're just a bunch of old guys playing songs they wrote 20 years ago" somebody called? hahahah :P

My Trusted MOGs

i love the arctic monkey.

My Trusted MOGs
Oh, it's fine, with the singer Interpol have, they will never get a movie anyway. /evil laugh
My Trusted MOGs
oh, forgot to mention Dave, how bad were Jagger's "woo-woos" in Sympathy? He sounded like a Collie being molested. And he KEPT DOING IT, over and over.
BTW, I will be stalking you in the audience at Digital Narm, so represent, Hyman!
My Trusted MOGs
they are past their prime. no way.
My Trusted MOGs
it was good but i am still holding my breath for them to release cocksucker blues
