MOG MOG

WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Artist:

on the advice of my friend and fellow mogger, gdolorio(http://mog.com/gdolario ), we headed out to the independent last night in san francisco to check out bon iver. i'm usually pretty weary of "singer songwriters" types lately. too often the hype doesn't live up to the talent for me. i know i'll get some haters but i put iron/wine, ray lamontagne, in this category.

so, i was really pretty impressed with these guys. lead singer had some killer, neil young, emotionally charged, electric leads. he was doing the falsetto, precious voice thing, but in a good way. the way antony (antony & the johnsons) or thom yorke can pull it off. he's THAT good. leans a little more towards the soulful prince style falsetto then the other cats. drummer was fantastically attentive. i felt it with them. the real deal.

left wanting more.

cool! I have heard good things about this band. Sincerity stands out these days to me too. I always get your blog notices but never have time to read your blogs, will do more often! Got to see your town's Rogue Wave and Two Gallants at SxSW. amazing, especially the later.

we will be playing Hemlock Tavern April 10, hope you can make it and share a pint w/us!

He's pretty fantastic and way more fun live than you'd expect. (It's a very pretty album, but in a haunting, wistful way that often doesn't translate well to the stage.)

I interviewed him a while back, nice guy. If you're curious: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/features/article/54773/isolation-songs-an-interview-with-bon-ivers-justin-vernon/

My favorite thing so far this year is that Big Dipper reissue, which probably doesn't count because it's not new.

The new records I like the most are probably Sons & Daughters, the Dirtbombs, Kelley Stoltz, Good Shoes, Retribution Gospel Choir and Mahjongg, though. And Bon Iver is up there.

I saw them, too, and yeah, very rocking. (I saw them taping a TV show, which took away some of the grit and immediacy, but they were still pretty good.)

My guess is that the Bon Iver album with take the same trip as The National's Boxer did last year. Straight to the top of numerous "Albums of the Year"-lists.
