  8. RobinH says Mmm. Depends if you are talking about bands or records. The problem with punk bands is they seem to either have a very short life span, therefore staying fairly true to the/their sound, or if they manage to keep going for a longer period, evolving into something else... less punk but more something else. If you were asking about an album post-'And Out Come The Wolves' then Sing Sing Death House - The Distillers would be one I would suggest. Thinking of a band in relation to the whole output might be harder.

  15. Iren says maybe not the reached the masses in the way that Rancid did... however a lot of people, me included, feel that Turbonegro's Apocalypse Dudes was the last great punk record.. I also liked The Thermals record from the past year, but it hasn't sunk into me the way that Apocalypse Dudes did....

  17. Iren says Silly me all this talk about albums got me thinking we were talking about the last great punk album... when you asked about great Punk Band... in that case I still have to go with Turbonegro... I have been a cult band in the states but have become huge in various parts of europe and seem to have done what a lot of other bands only dream of.... they have cultivated an underground cult that rivals that of The Misfits..

  18. kat3260 says I don't think any of these _TOP_ Rancid, but Pennywise, Bouncing Souls, and Avail put out some good albums after. Oh, and definitely Refused and the Dropkick Murphys. But I don't love any of them as much as I love "...And Out Come The Wolves"...

  22. kat3260 says yeah...just listened to the first half of "And Out Come The Wolves"...I'm definitely sticking with you on this one DH. That album is where it's at...I can't put any of the more recent ones above it. Green Day is cool, but more pop-punk to me.

  23. gradys kitchen says Apples and oranges time. ...And Out Come the Wolves is more of a ska album then straight forward punk. That being said, the only thing that I heard that came close to the intensity and catchiness of Out Come the Wolves is Destruction by Definition by The Suicide Machines. Also, by the time Rancid released their swan song, the best Mighty Mighty Bosstone albums were behind them, but I would recommend these discs to any ska/punk fans who have never picked them up, judging the band solely on its one radio hit "Impression That I Get".

  27. MisterBo says Since Rancid? I don't know. I don't even think Rancid's that great a band. "...And Out Come The Wolves" is an amazing album, but they've never even been close to creating something like that again. And don't even get me started with the single "Fall Back Down" dreadful song, and having Kelly Osbourne and one of the Good Charlotte dudes in the video...ugh... As career I'd have to go with Pennywise, great albums all around. They do date Rancid by 2 or 3 years though. I think the question should go back some years and be, Has there been a better punk band since Bad Religion or Nofx? That answer would be, no there hasnt.

  28. 1234chainsaw says To be honest, '90s California punk never really did it for me, either in its ska-punk or its pop-punk variants, so for me a short answer would be that hell yeah there have been better punk bands since Rancid. (I like MisterBo's Bad Religion version of the question much better.) But, to be constructive, I have some suggestions here. I also second Turbonegro and Refused.

  29. champy says Out Come The Wolves was the first CD I ever purchased. I can sing every lyric on that album and sometimes my friends freak out. Last "great" punk album though...?
    Permalink posted 12/29/2006
  30. Known Human says Well, according to my research, MC5's cover of Tutti-Fruitti on 1970's "Back in the USA" is the first punk song, managing to compress the entire track into what, 90 seconds, thus establishing the sound later to be known as punk. So, true punk songs are actually covers of early rock and pop songs. That means Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are the most punk band ever. And they just put out an album two months or so ago.

  31. pETULENTfRENZY9000 says I also agree with Turbonegro, and River brings up a good point of let's see how that new Stooges album sounds (with Mike Watt on bass no less)....should be awesome. I'd also like to remind some of ya that NOMEANSNO is still out there kickin it.

  33. Iren says If you want to talk about first gen punk bands that are still alive kicking, and making good to great albums, you have to mention: Social Distortion T.S.O.L. The Damned Radio Birdman The New York Dolls all of which have put out solid records since the release of Out Come the Wolves...

  35. Mike the Knife says It's more punk-rock to not give a rat's ass about such distinctions. But, hair-splitting about style out the window, here are some votes for Bad Religion, Rage and the Breeders. (And if you speed up any Pixies song, it's at least as "punk" as Rancid's super-fun, but totally derivative ska-punk - and smarter.)

  36. adam judy says i prefer to think of punk as a cultural movement rather than a musical genre. its unfair to group rubbish like green day and rancid or any of those other pop punk outfits alongside bands such as the clash or the sex pistols. punk was always more about the attitude and the style than the music. now im probably gonna be spat on....

  37. 1234chainsaw says Kudos to Mike for calling Rancid on their derivativeness. Also add at least Buzzcocks and Stiff Little Fingers to Iren's list. Adam raises questions that were discussed a few days ago on another thread. (As my comment there reveals, I agree with him to a certain extent.) We need a thread merger!

  38. Iren says I'd like to respectfully address Adam calling Green Day and Rancid rubbish... while I don't think that either band is up to the standards of The Ramones or The Clash, both have released entertaining music that I and that others have enjoyed. Dismissal of a band that someone loves tends to shut the people who love them out of this kind of conversation which seems to be more intended to provoke people to think than to declare a truth. I always recall what Frank Black of the Pixies (at least I have attributed this comment to him for years) said when asked about Rancid and Green Day which went something like this "I don't need to listen to Rancid or Green Day when I have records by The Clash and the Damned". Which to me always meant that each generation has it's own punk icons and there is no need to slag off the new generations heroes.... I have also come to realize that if 10% of the kids who pick up a Rancid or Green Day are inspired to pick up a record by The Clash or Stiff Little Fingers then that is a good thing... Also yes punk has always been about the attitude, how else do such varied sounding bands as: The Cramps, The Talking Heads, Television, Blondie, The Deadboys, and the Ramones got lumped under the punk tag not to mention people talking about Johnny Cash and NWA being punk ... at the same time I think that we can all hear that there is a sonic style that is 'punk'..... i.e. stripped down loud fast snotty rock n roll...

  43. jenny says Hi, David. I've got nothing against Rancid, but if that's the last punk band you got into, there's a lot to check out. Here are some recent punk bands I love FM Knives Chlorox Girls Observers (All three in the Buzzcocks/Red Kross family) Parts & Labor (Husker Du-ish) Ponys (garage with Richard Hell-ish vocals) Exploding Hearts (Ramones) The pAper chAse (no references spring to mind, but definitely punk) Liars (first album mostly...they're still good but not as punk) Mission of Burma Yeah Yeah Yeahs Be Your Own Pet River City Tanlines (girl-fronted garage punk with a little metallic-ness) Wet Confetti Swan Island (These two are in the Delta 5/Au Pairs/Go4 family and both from Portland) French Toast (Dischord family, spooky synth punk) Coachwhips (Pure blues punk chaos, unfortunately now R.I.P.) Ex-Models (post-punk, super-short-spike-y songs...Go4 undergoing electro-shock treatment) Archie Bronson Outfit (definitely in G04 family but bluesier) The Mae Shi (Much like Ex-Models, songs under 1 minute, bizarre, acquired taste but brilliant) I am mostly excluding pure garage punk bands like Dirtbombs, Little Killers, Mr. Airplane Man, etc. because the list is already ridiculously long. I'd also highly recommend Terre T's show on WFMU from 3-6 on Saturday afternoons if you like punk and want to hear new bands. (It's archived if you're busy Saturdays.) There's a hell of a lot going on in this genre right now, and none of it is on major labels or normal radio stations. best, Jenny

  44. 1234chainsaw says As always, Jenny's got a fuller story. Some of the bands she mentions I've yet to check out. I linked to a post partly about Observers, so yay for that. FM Knives are excellent (and from Sacramento); sadly they broke up after only one record. Clorox Girls (from the Bay Area) are excellent as well; their first album is better than the second. Big props also to Ponys, Exploding Hearts, Mission Of Burma, Coachwhips, early Liars, and garage-punk. Now let's let pogo-ing resume . . .

  45. foolonthehill says I'm obviously late to this conversation, but just wanted to say how great And Out Come the Wolves is. It was honestly the last new punk album I listened to before losing interest (Indie rock like Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. were next in the progression). Loved Op Ivy also (too bad they didn't make a couple more albums!) and Bouncing Souls and Pennywise and on and on and on. I even enjoyed the poppy end of it all in the mid 90's: Jawbreaker, Face to Face, Screeching Weasel (all Lookout bands) NOFX, etc. In response to Jenny and chainsaw, I agree with some of that list (The Observers, FM Knives, good call on those) but I don't consider all of those bands punk. Mission of Burma, though great, pretty much defined Post-Punk which was anti-punk. And the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I guess look a little punk (is it possible to actually look punk?) but for me their music is much more garage rock. Either way, a lot of great bands on that list! Hopefully it'll start a new conversation.

  46. jenny says Hah, snagged on the punk/post-punk barbed wire fence again. I thought of a couple more, which may also be post-something or other, but if you like punk, you'll probably enjoy. The Ex (20-year running dutch outfit, rampaging drums, super political lyrics) Aframes (stark, minimal, nightmarish, brilliant and, oddly, on Sub Pop)

  48. 1234chainsaw says A Frames are great but I prefer their pre-Sub Pop output (OK, their first two records were released on a friend's label, so I may be partial). They sound too futuristic for me to count them as punk, though.
