amazing photo essay on life as a deadhead in early 80's

Posted 11 months ago

jay blakesburg, one of the top rock photographers of all time, has just released tons of images of what it was like to be on the road as a deadhead in the late 70's early 80's. this was a few years before my time (my first show was garden 83) but it's impossible for me to see the differences. this was an incredibly adventurous and innocent way of life. just amazing to look at these photos. enjoy!!!

    Interesting photos.

Even more interesting is the fact that the MOG creator has (and uses) a Facebook account ;-)

thanks for the post.  haven't checked it out yet, but i'm psyched.

guess i've already dated myself so i can admit that my years were a bit earlier.  one major difference i noticed though came around 1984.  differences in birth control usage and the existence of AIDS definitely had an impact on sexuality.

hope you still had a blast!

Well that was certainly educational. My first show was around Jan '68 and my last show was Jan '79 and nothing I ever went to was anything like that. I even saw them in a club with about 50 people! All the stuff I've read about this period doesn't give any indication of what went on either, judging by those photos; I finally understand why deadheads of this era are so much the way they are.

Although I only liked one Dead song 'A Touch Of Grey' & just didn't get the whole Deadhead scene(I didn't do drugs at all), I can still appreciate the social/cultural phenomena that follow the Dead. And I'm kinda 'hippyish' these days due to my natural foods/nature loving ways these days, but still can't stand the Dead, haha.

I like this pic(love the flag halter top & guys in dresses!):

Haha, umm definitely not my new avatar. I think that's a guy & the pic got cut off, cause there's two guys w/dresses to the right of him(they have facial hair).
