What I will speak out against is lies.  If you can't even be bothered to learn the truth, you should reconsider even having an opinion.  It's 2008 and it's as close as teh Google and teh Snopes.  If you can use Mog, you have no excuse for ignorance.

i have never liked mccain, his positions, his voting record, his anything.  i was completely indifferent to obama; i despised hillary but would have voted for her if she was the candidate.

however, a recent article in the NY Times that gave some insight into obama's background - his dual legal career - as a law professor and as a senator - shed new light on the man for me.  he's the smartest guy running.  i think we already know what happens when a moron is in the hot seat.

Obama is smart, I'll grant you.  That, in itself, would be a nice change.  But smarts alone don't account for much when matched up against practical experience, of which I just feel he's lacking in.

who would the businesses allow to mess with their global deals (if anyone) and which candidate already owes more favors?

obviously, the Bush family business goes way back, and is causing us major problems.  what are we looking at for the future?  the movie NETWORK rocked my political thoughts in '78 when it described businesses as the real countries and geography as secondary.

As far as the candidates and big business goes, I think that's what Robin was asking about, it all depends on what your priorities are. Ironically, Hillary was the big business candidate.  She probably had the broadest CEO support among the candidates (a sampling- Morgan Stanley, Google, Dreamworks).  Obama seems to have the most support from Hollywood, consider Geffon, Katzenberg and Oprah. McCain is a big business man who desperately needs to win the religious conservative vote if he wants to win.  He is backed by FedEx, MGM, Morgan Chase and Stephen Schwarzman who is considered the new king of Wall St. (CEO Blackstone Group).  And yes, it is easy for these folks to spread the contributions around when there is a $2,300. cap, a drop in the bucket to most of them.  Money Magazine speculates that 75% of the Hollywood community gives to multiple candidates. How big business votes is probably determined by the candidate's stand on issues of importance to them.  If you stand to benefit from federal action to reform health care you'll vote democrat and if you will benefit from free trade you'll probably vote republican.

Look, it's no new notion that most big businesses lean republican because the basic tenants of the democratic party are to limit Bush's tax cuts, penalize companies that build plants overseas and increase taxes on private equity and tax funds.  Personally, I see Obama as having voted in line with big business's interests for most of his Senate career.  However, I do think that as much as he is part of the business center he seems to believe there are things beyond the economy that need defending, that the gross national product is not the whole story. In other words, American business has to thrive our economy is dependent on it and it's pollyanna to think otherwise.  However, that does not give big business the right to treat this country like part of their sandbox that they get to play in and mold to their needs.  Without someone defending the rest of the picture, meaning things like education reform, restored civil liberties, universal health care and holding certain big business accountable (i.e.- the oil companies), untrammeled big business can be a serious enemy.

On the issue of gun control Obama has stated, "We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respect the 2nd Amendment and people's tradition," (2/11/08- primaries).  So if you're afraid he wants to take your gun away please do some research on his voting record regarding gun control.  His record is geared toward the owner's rights and against the blanket availability of guns on the street. Probably as happy a medium as those opposed and those affirmative can get.

On the issue of national security please read the Lugar-Obama initiative that was signed into law by Congress on 2/11/05.  Basically, it expands U.S. cooperation to destroy conventional weapons.  It also expands the State Departments ability to detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction.  Lugar is the Republican leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Community.  This is bi-partisan legislature at it's best.

    Let's dance.

I would like to see our privacy from snooping government and telcos protected.  Someone has to address cyber security, and our online rights and Net Neutrality is an even bigger issue than anyone realises.  I may be wrongly optimistic, but I hope he will change some of these travesties.

Debiess  -Net Neutrality is the idea that no single body controls the internet (not telecoms or cable companies, as they would like it to be in this country).  The big cable and telcos want to get you to pat for a tierd internet in which the more you pay the more you have access to.  The less you pay the more limited your choices.  You go where they want you to.  This will be the undoing of anyone whose living even remotely hinges on the internet -from municipalities to politicians to people who just want to share baby photos.  It effects everyone.  Especially social networks like Mog.
