WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

gillian welch in golden gate park this weekend

Posted over 3 years ago
went the "strictly bluegrass" festival this weekend in golden gate park to see gillian welch with friend and fellow mogger, steve simon. unfortunately 400,000 people (no lie!) also went to the bluegrass festival this weekend. not really having the patience, time, or wherewithall to see most of the festival's 3 day performances, i went in just for gillian. (but missed elvis costello - doh!)and as always, her and david rawlings provided some of the best folk/americana/country one can hear. having emmylou harris come out for a few tunes upped the whole thing with draw dropping harmonies. (saw emmylou come out with allison kraus last year with gillian). the weather was perfect.if you don't own "the revelator" by gillian and listen to wilco, or any of the no-depression country stuff, i urge you to move into this.i put up a sweet live version of "the revelator" - awesome sound quality for a boot.. url here:http://tinyurl.com/p8xka

  2. kb says sounds awesome. def. need to check her and her no-depression stuff out. that's pretty funny! i chose to go to OB instead. better choice if you don't want to get trampled by lambs... or bison. blue angels not so loud, good waves! she'll be back for bridge school, so i def. hope to check her out then.

  5. eshep says i've also had the pleasure of seeing gillian and david play along with emmylou a few times. always a treat. i was lucky enough to see the three of them joined on stage by buddy miller and patty griffin as they went through the band's 'the weight', with the layered harmonies in the chorus. so great. 'angel band' too. yeah people are missing out who are not listening to gillian welch. she's a great gateway drug into so many more fine (and more authentic) bluegrass and country music that is overlooked.

  6. vacasmagras says I'm so sorry I missed this concert. I was feeling bad about missing all of HSB this weekend, so I made myself a mixtape (cd!) and included Gillian's live Pocahontas on it. Thanks for posting the Revelator link. She is (they are) so incredibly talented. I was shopping at Amoeba in the summer of '98 and happened to be there when this woman and man started singing gorgeous and sad music. That was my first taste of Gillian and David!

  7. leftoverking says gillian and david were just about the best show i've seen all year. they closed their set by singing accapella without their microphones. their voices filled the auditorium without the p.a. and it was very powerful. awesome.

  8. max says i was there on saturday when that shit was packed too (gotta roll with the freinds and family passes, though even that was really crowded) but i still wish i had seen elvis costello, though i did see paul simon that night instead, i think it was a fair enough trade

  10. steve simon says she killed it for sure. the truckers were great under tough conditions( the sun was shining) and weir and the waybacks were great, his voice sounded better then it did in the last 15 years of the GD

  11. Matt Mills says Elvis was awesome on Friday, and then again yesterday with T-Bone Burnett. I walked over to the park yesterday afternoon to see Drive-By Truckers, they were pretty awesome. I do agree, though...It was a bit too crowded for my taste.
