Rick Rubin Joins MOG's Board of Directors - Seriously

Posted about 1 year ago

moggers,

it comes with great pleasure and honor to announce the great, legendary RICK RUBIN as MOG's newest board director. what does this mean? well, for one, it means rick is taking a fairly active role in the development of MOG. we've got some pretty awesome plans for our beloved site and mr. rubin, whom i've come to know well over the past few months, has brilliant insights into what music fans want. he's so good, in fact, that i wish he could spend his days doing user interface and information architecture for us full time! heh.

rick rubin is someone who i've looked up to immensely for as far back as i can remember. it's truly a stellar advancement for MOG to have his participation, and i believe it's also a testament to MOG, our future plans, and our credibility. much of the music he's responsible for has had a profound effect on my life. his spirit has always been on MOG from day one as a result. so... here's to us!!! cheers y'all!!!!

formal press release below:

Rick Rubin Joins MOG Board of Directors

Berkeley, CA-August 12, 2008-Rick Rubin, who Time Magazine named as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World," has joined the Board of Directors for MOG, (http://mog.com), a music blogging platform powered by industry-leading music discovery technology, it was announced today.

The Grammy-winning Rubin has produced albums for some of music's biggest names, including the Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Tom Petty, the Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, System of a Down, and Run DMC. In May, 2007, Rubin joined Columbia Records in a unique executive and creative partnership with Rob Stringer and Steve Barnett. Rubin is also the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings.

"This is a great validation of what we're building," said David Hyman, founder and CEO of MOG, which was recently named one of the top 10 hottest music websites by WIRED. "Rick has established himself as one of world's top music producers because he has a great sensibility for what music fans want. We're excited to have his expertise help shape the company."

Since its public beta launch in July 2006, MOG has provided the ultimate tools for expressing yourself as a musical human being. The result is a world-class online music destination created by MOG's passionate community of music lovers and comprised of a network of thousands of music blogs.

Completely free, anyone can access the best music content online or contribute to the community by creating their own MOG pages by visiting http://mog.com.

By the way, public beta launch was July '06?  Why does my page say I've been here since June that year?  And most of those in my trusted where here before me?  Was there a private beta?

Which brings me to a bigger issue.  Every time I read about the mogger of the month, there's always the question of how you discovered Mog.  And to this day, I have no clue.  I simply can't remember how I found this place.  It's weird.

Be careful what you wish for. With Rick's penchant for "reducing" rather than "producing" MOG could end up as a mimographed single sheet fanzine before too long :)

I realize that this will make me sound like a giant malcontent....I guess because RR is on your board, it will increase MOG's legitimacy and viability to labels, and Wall Street...which will help ensure MOG's future.

But in terms of creative consequence, I'm not too optimistic. Rubin has largely been an absentee landlord since taking his gig at Columbia Records. plus he spent shitloads of cash redecorating his office while the company laid off hundreds of employees. His recent, published theories about music consumption, subscription, and the overall value of music of music have sounded naive at best.

Here's hoping that he actually learns something from MOG, and Moggers. Rubin came from the street, he earned his credibility there, and in 2008, in terms of music, MOG IS THE STREET.

From "the street?" What street would that be? Easy street, perhaps. Rick has never gone without his whole life. He grew up in affluence and made his first million while still in college.
