This is great stuff, David. Tom Waits is so unique on the musical landscape...his characters inhabit thoses spaces between the wall & the shadow, the bruised hearts bent out of shape by society's pliars.
I like his rocknroll chops here. He's always exhibited a deep understanding of various musical forms
...I remember (vaguely) seeing a little baby Tom Waits on a double bill with a little baby Leon Redbone in a hall above the El Paso Police Dept in about 1973. They have both grown into their grizzled personnas & they gather from experience & continue to grow & evolve.
Great Post, David, & the soundtrack is awesome! MOG RADIO ROCKS!
thanks man. yes. mog radio does rock. the more people explore all access, the more y'all hopefully appreciate the nuances...
i love the tactile/ visual conversations on MOG . . only here can i get a great post reminding me about such a unique album and get me twitching to go find a copy, and then a folowup up post about a show in a hall in a hall above the El Paso Police Dept in about 1973 . . .
Waits is definitely a talent.
I love the MOG player too. I think the best feature of all is how it find artists like the one you are listening to and plays those songs for you. I've discovered a lot of great new artists this way.
Don't recall this album, but I didn't get turned onto him until the '80s so thx D. I have a few of his cds too. Liking what I hear on the mogplayer. Waits is a true original.
Back when I got turned onto him I kept seeing 'Frank's Wild Years' showing up on best of lists of various musicians in Rolling Stone magazine. I had to find out what all the fuss was about & went & bought the lp w/o hearing a song(which I did alot back then). I wasn't quite sure what to make of Waits when I first listened to the lp, it was off the wall but strangely compelling. The album grew on me & have been a fan ever since.
Not that it validates anything..but why isn't he in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. I'm a big,big fan.
Your either an evil capitalist, looking for any oppurtunity to make a buck.....
Or a pure unadaultrated lover of music.
One of those two is why you started your career in music, and it has led to the creation of MOG.
I am guessing unadaultrated lover of music, and Tom Waits just proves my theory.
Tom Waits?... vinyl?... better be getting to that Mog player thing then...
All of you Tom Waits fans, step aside. I am the ultimate Tom Waits fan. Been a fan since a promo copy of his debut album showed up in my mail box back in '73.
But anyway, if you are a true fan, you must read Barney Hoskyn's superb Waits bio, Low Side of the Road. It will for sure broaden your understanding of Waits and his music.
Michael, pre-internet I was relegated to discovering this mystery called Tom Waits through used CD stores and hearsay. There really wasn't a lot on him, but I did find a copy of the book Small Change (I think it was written around 88), and that answered some questions, but left me thirsty for more. I recently leafed through a collection of interviews and was quite surprised at the ammount all those interviews managed to let you into his psyche.
Thanks David, love the album, and am glad for Mog All Access since it some how slipped into storage before I ever go it on my hard drive. I've been missing it for some time.
a voice that goes well with a rainy summer night and a cup of coffee if you ask me...............you did ask me right?
i bought a great book in london last month which is a collection of all of his interviews. think it was only published in london.
Was unaware this was on vinyl.
Favorite Waits album?
Easily one of my 10 favorites of the previous decade.
Almost makes me want to buy a turntable.
Word up, DH. I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Waits and his knock-down-drag-out band at the historic Fox Theatre in Atlanta for his Glitter & Doom tour, summer of '08. NPR ended up streaming that entire show as a podcast.
Waits is a master at his game. Truth be told, I like him now better than I ever did when he was younger. Old guy's getting better and better with age.
He was ranked as the most underrated rock musician of all time by Rolling Stone. I think that only applies even more now.
TynansAnger: "Almost makes me want to buy a turntable."
...aye carumba! I couldn't live without one of those.
Well, I could...I just wouldn't want to.
They come cheap nowadays. Get a nice ion table...no need to find an analog input for your receiver and you can convert to mp3s, easy as pie. Do it, man. You won't regret it.
if y'all want to go the right route on analog, follow my lead....

...what might a girl have to do to get some quality listening time in that little room?
I think we all know the answer to that question . . .
(hee, hee -- J/K!)
So - someone just made a Tom Waits reference in this MOG Feature here:

;-)
Best scene in "Coffee and Cigarettes" is by far the one with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop!
