WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

my top album discoveries of 2007

Posted about 1 year ago
greets moggers, here's my list. these are not all 2007 releases but 2007 personal discoveries! so, in no particular order:isley brothers - givin' it backdiscovered shopping the bins at amoeba, i bought it because i dug the album cover. didn't open it for over a year and then out of boredom with my music collection, put in on and was blown away. sent me on a major 60's/70's soul kick. epic covers of hendrix, neil young and james taylor that shed new light on the originals. roberta flack - chapter tworeleased in 1970, another one i discovered by buying from the album cover picture alone. (btw, what a nutty fun music discovery tool!) this album is sublime, like an inky sryah chased with a chunk of scharffen berger 80% cocoa chocolate. roberta was a cross between aretha and sarah vaughan. i put this on when i need to lower my over-caffeinated heartrate.wilco - sky blue skythe spirit of jerry garcia lives here. beautiful melodies that cradle me to the netherworldradiohead - in rainbows disc setno "kid a", but "house of cards" alone puts the record in my top list.most bands would kill to have the radiohead "throw-aways" be their major album release. ha ha!(said with nelson muntz from simpsons accent).marvin gaye - trouble manmost folks know the isaac hayes "blaxploitation" soundtrack to "shaft", but this one marvin did for the movie "troubleman", i like even better. killer, meters-style funk grooves, gayes masterful vocals and gorgeous ballads.rilo kiley - under the blacklightso so friggin slick. makes want to drive the malibu coast wearing all white, with this blasting out a convertible. i love her sexy pop voice. smooch.ryan adams - easy tigerthe spirit of jerry living here too. for me, this is the record where ryan adams nails it. probably played this more than any of the others on my list.jay-z - american gangsterhip hop as written in sunday's new york times might be in the toilet,:http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/30/arts/music/30sann.html?_r=1&oref=slogin,but jay-z saved the year with the so goddamn soulful release. proud of a man who can be so big and still dig deep into his heart and put out something so sugary sweet.heartworn highways - various artistsincredible "field recordings" from the emerging singer/songwriter movement happening in late 1970's south. captivating, spooky, "you are there" recordings of townes van zandt.

  2. Michael Goldberg says Great list for 2007. I've always thought that best-of list for the year should not be just limited to recordings released that year. Love that you included older albums that you discovered in 2007.

  3. ivylander says The Isleys, yes! That version of "Spill The Wine" leaves Eric Burdon in the dust. These guys are so very underappreciated....

  4. jason1969 says Great stuff Dave! My dad was a big Roberta Flack fan. I agree wholeheartedly with the Radiohead. Its great. Here are 3 discoveries for me this year: Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha This was truly a discovery for this year, because I never even heard of this cat until my wife hipped me up to him. We then heard a NPR: All Songs Considered live set from he and his band and were hooked. Saw him live at the Warfeild, and he was amazing, he plays violin, sings like Jeff Buckley ... Amazing Soft Machine -Third Weird live improvy jazz fusion. Dips into some wankery, but really great saxaphone and early moog work. The best is that iTunes has it at $3.99 for the whole double album. For fans of King Crimson, Yes, Man Man, Speaking of Man Man: Man Man - Six Demon Bag These guys are awesome, especially live. Thanks to winning a Mog contest to see Modest Mouse (Thank you very much!) I also got to see these guys open up the show. Run, do not walk to see these guys play live! Any album is good, but this one is great. If you havent discovered them this year, make them your first new favorite band of 2008

  15. FastRMacR says Great selections all! I used 3 free plays for that Isley tune (they always make me think of Jimi) (and I'm still partial to Eric Burdon's wine). :) I too appreciate your traipse out of the years here. I grew up on that Roberta Flack album. "I also see you like this album too":http://mog.com/MasonJar/blog_post/96502 - man she can just make your ears melt! I've seen much of this Wilco mentioned and seen many folks tipping to Ryan Adams - I guess I should take some good hints. ('Unlimited' budget soon my friend). All of these great top lists and reviews are just incredible. More great reasons for that Rhapsody player. OK- FEB 1 ! heh. Besides - how else am I to start playin' that _incredible_ Bill Evans collection of yours (and Lester's Miles Davis)?! Many thanks again for your comment on my Milestones post. You've a great site here! Just like your top list - fantastic tastes in music. _Play it_ man! Best for the New Year to you. Cheers!
