PHISH CLOBBER FANS AT JONES BEACH AMPITHEATHER
-
Artist:

enjoy these pics folks. they put me in the photo pit and i had a killer camera.

no lie. these guys clobbered the audience last night, leaving phishheads dizzy and drooling, as i hear they've been doing since their reunion.
fist set started off "okay" with a runaway jim, foam, stealing time from the fault plan, tiber o, cities, driver, reba, possum, farmhouse, if i could. possum really won the round.
i'm old school phish. i like it when they stick to bizarre lyrics (that serve almost as matra chants) and hard improvisations. it's the best of zappa, grateful dead, parliament rolled up into one.

when they shoot for melodies and ballads that attempt to be soulful, it doesn't work so well for me. the voices are maybe too innocent and the melodies aren't biting. too bad for them that's what 90% of what people want in a band.
but if you dig raw rock/funk/jazz talent with instruments. it's very hard to beat them.

second set saw them step it up big time with a Mikes > Simple > Wolfmans > weekapaug, circus, kill devil falls, hood, loving cup.
i battle with wolman's brother. again, they should just start the song at the jam because the song part of it doesn't bite. oy. the jam on the other hand, was phenomenal.

mikes song - kiiller. harry hood - the same. lovin cup? for me, that song kills me with bar mitzvah bands so you put phish on it and it's truly awesome.

encore was my kind of non-sensical lyric, raw talent monstereque song - suzy greenberg. ahhhhh.

WOW!!! Looks and sounds like an amazing show!!!
Phish 3.0 is the real deal. Bring on Bonnaroo!
Very Nice!!!
Thats some fine photography, take a bow David. Zappa/The Dead, & Parliament....oh yeah. Touches of Sun Ra...all delightfully Phishey. Great Post.
Great pictures! Thanks for the honest raw thoughts.
Easily my favorite first set of 3.0H ...so far.
Anyone going to be at Alpine?
Nice pics and analysis Dave! wish I could have been there in the pit with ya.....looking forward to seeing them at the Roo. They should be well greased by then.
You take gr8 pics Dave!
Yeah! Sweet deal getting into the photo pit, Dave! Is it just me, or has Chris Kuroda (the lighting guru, and 5th band member) stepped up the light show, too?
Nice pics David! I've been contemplating DLing this from their website. I'd agree with your assesment of Phish on the surreal tip, that was always what attracted me to them. I still remember pre 97 when Wolfman's was a groaner when they'd play it. I slao remember seeing them play the new funked up version for one of the first (if not the first) times in Dublin. They can bring it. It's broughten.
phishheads,phishheads,phishheads smelly smelly phishheads....
NIce. I like the first shot of Trey the best out of these.
What were you shooting with?
can't wait til bonnaroo
yeah. good time y'all.
Totally agree on the melodies/ballad point. Prince Caspian, for example, tests my inner fanboy. But Mike's Song and Weekapaug... Man, that's all I need.
Nice pics! Sounds weird, but it just hit me that Phish is really back.
so sweet. those pix r really something...
This post goes great with my Phish Clifford Ball post.
Who Want's Phish?
Oh man, the tapes of this show are incredible. The back half of this show SMOKES! The Hood, man. THE HOOD! Followed by Loving Cup? Damn!!!!!
Search out the Schoeps recording on BT,etree, org. Totally worthwhile audience recording!
