Wilco releases new album in free streaming to thwart online leaks...

From the band to fans:

"Well, we made it nearly a month with copies of Wilco (the album) floating around out there before it leaked. Pretty impressive restraint in this day and age. But the inevitable happened last night. Since we know you're curious and probably have better things to do than scour the internet for a download (though we do understand the attraction of the illicit), we've posted a stream of the full album at http://wilcoworld.net/records/thealbum/. Feel free to refer to it as "wilco (the stream)" if you must."

"We also have our usual guilt abatement plan for downloaders. If you have downloaded the record, we suggest you make a donation to one of the band's favorite charities, the Inspiration Corporation-an organization we've supported in the past & who are doing great work in the city of Chicago. Information and donation button here: http://inspirationcorp.org/."

Tasteful! i'm going to inspirationcorp.org now....

Yes, Wilco's taking a page from Neil Young's playbook on streaming albums free before release.

Seemed to work real well with Fork in the Road... not.

Thanks for stopping by & dropping a comment!

Givin' it a listen now.  Very good album, I can see it in my download queue (the legal one from Amazon!) in the near future.

It seems that as bands chill out and share their music more freely, we (the music-buying public) become more willing to buy their music.  Funny how that works...

Seriously, I am detecting a trend (I don't think it is just me) that people really appreciate small gestures like this, and they tend to support those bands with their stimulus money.  Hey, it's all to get the economy going, right?

And when NIN released "The Slip" and the tour tracks for free, I turned around and bought "Year Zero."  I think the bands understand the technology (and the psychology) better than the record labels do.

Another example - Coldplay released one track from "Viva La Vida" for free ("Violet Hill" I think) and so I bought the album.

    Is the RIAA listening?  Hello?

i believe it's goign to be as slow painful process for the labels.

    Thanks a lot!

I'll be at the Berkeley one. Saw 'em there a summer or two back and it was great. Not to mention, living 5 blocks from the venue doesn't hurt. :)

Looks like they've got 3 nights at the Wiltern in LA lined up. It feels like a Hollywood Bowl show is imminent for some reason.

If you can't beat them, join them I say. I think album previews really encourage sales, since people already know they want what they are buying. I'll buy this, because I already know I dig the album.

I hate buying without hearing first, and I HATE 30 second samples. Who was the fool that came up with that as a standard? Why not a minute or 90 seconds? that's a much better sample, if you are not going to offer full streams. What's the harm in that?

agree musicrx.  30 second samples don't cut it

Wilco have been doing this with their albums since YHF, this is nothing new.   Good album though, gets better with every listen.  Cant wait to see them in Berkeley too!
