Doesn't matter. The screech of Geddy Lee is the only issue. And I say, "Spare me." (Although. to be honest, he's quite a remarkable bassist.)
starstuff says
big rush fan here... and that's a hilarious video.
I think the band's original idea was something like progressive rock (like Yes) + heavy metal (like Zeppelin) = Rush.
ROCKNROLLPIMP says
they are rock
ie
progressive if you wanna get technical (i abhor sub-genres)
*NOT*

Huge Rush Fan.
Geddy and Neil throw down too many melodic grooves and there are way too many tie dyes at Rush shows for them to go in the heavy metal bin.

Obviously, the time is not now for me to wax poetic about Rush. It would only prove what a bigtime dork I am.
But, I can honestly say from the first time I remember hearing any music, I remember hearing Rush. They have been at the front of my play list, since I had a play list.
Now, I'm not saying that all you people are wrong, or that I am the Rush Expert. So I'm going to site a website here.
taken from Wikipedia:
"Heavy metal (sometimes referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music[1] that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.[2] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos. The All Music Guide states that "of all rock & roll's myriad forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality."
Given wiki's definition there it's hard to say that Rush is not heavy metal.
Sabbath is the originator of heavy metal .... tell me they didn't groove ..... Ozzie also wore tie dye (and his wifes dresses according to rumour) and hung with hippies, so that argument is out the door.
You cannot deny that Rush was a VERY influential on emerging Metal acts and helped define the genre in its early days.... 2112 was the holy of holies for many metal heads back in the day, and still is for many metal heads now.
However checking out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_band#History
We can see that Rush has gone though many eras.... many sounds.... have influenced many genes and taken influence from many genres.
Rush is many things and nothing all at once. Their music and their staying power has defied categorization. They have transcended the box we put our music in and have showed us all that you do not need to stick to what you are doing to stay successful. They put their middle fingers up to what was expected of them as musicians and evolved their music in their own way on their own terms, and still rocked your face off.
Being a Hesher at heart I have always and will always consider Rush a metal band.
I can appreciate that they have delved into many things. But considering how much influence they had on the genre of metal and how many metal heads still listen to all their albums, including their synth heavy ones... I'm going to vote that Rush is clearly metal.

wax poetic about rush = big time dork - Yeah that seems about right :). Just kidding, really, I've got no opinion one way or the other, though it is a funny video, and I went to school and knew enough salivating Rush fans - one who could not be convinced otherwise that Neal Pert couldn't possibly be the "best drummer in the world" (our arguement was that it was impossible to make a statement like that, since you couldn't possibly hear every drummer in the world). It was fun messing with him though. We even made a list of drummers better than Neal Pert, one of which was Peter Tork of the Monkees and Animal from the Muppet Show. He, however, did not find this funny in the least.
seo tool says
I am not a fan of Rush but when I was 15 or so my friend who was an insane Rush fan took me to their Moving Pictures concert. I've got to say I was pretty impressed with Neil Pert's drumming but his being in Rush is akin to setting a diamond in a Tootsie Roll.
No way are they heavy metal. In the Venn Diagram of music I see Rush's circle overlapping a lot with Styx & Yes and I would call that genre "who the fuck knows".
faceplant says
Gosh I'm amazed a bunch of gold and platinum albums yet most people chiming in are not Rush fans !! .... also please please please don't put them in the same category as Styx .... Lord have Mercy !!
PeakNess says
Rush is a faction of Progressive Rock music, unique enough to have their own genre.
Think what you will about them, but they have been cited as a main influence of many working bad ass musicians today.. both as a group, and as individual instrumentalist. They are also the reason I got into music. I've seen them 5 times. They never let me down.
walkingthecow says
i wouldnt put them in the heavy metal category. their first album was more hard rock but once peart joined the band, they developed almost a fusion sound. i agree that they would probably fall under the progressive rock/arena rock genre.

LOVE RUSH!
grew up with rush in the house speakers, along with the police, led zep, james brown, beach boys, aretha, gtr, kinks, all of it. my family taste was like the buffet bar at bob's big boy down the street. anyway, when all the middle school girls were mean and annoying and when the boys were only wanting one thing, music: any sound that made me feel alive and well and strong and steady, was my fuel. and shit, still is.
rush is not the heavy metal that we think of today. they for sure have elements of metal and influenced metal, but no way, no how are they metal only. they are rock, prog, and fusion, and like most talented artists, have evolved their sound over time, like them or not.
Wanbli says
I grew up on Rush- one of my first concerts (after KISS)
I also got into metal in early 80's - we looked at Motley Crue, Venom, Metallica, Saxon, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Sabbath as all metal
Rush was never lumped in with these bands
They are Prog Rock
2112 is one of the best concept albums ever :)

rush!
although they may have helped develop the heavy metal sound, they are definitely progressive rock to me. hard prog rock, but prog rock none the less.
RobinH says

Did the word 'dork' come into play because of the weird physics-types that went to 2500 live shows? I've never seen Rush live (have always wanted to). The early stuff has gotten better over the years for me. I still consider _Signals_ an all-time fave.
Yeah I vote for progressive rock - anyone wanna try for "progressive metal"?
Nice post/thread. Thanks.
