MOG Photo Exclusive: Wilco OVER THE TOP In Berkeley

Posted over 2 years ago
friday night, myself and a slew of moggers (spencer, kate, supertopsecret, steve simon, gabe adiv, kb to name a few) went up to the greek theatre to see wilco.having seen dead shows at the greek in the 80's, it's always been one of my favorite venus and to now work and live 5 minutes away is real privilege. the night was warm, the crowd beautiful.the addition of nels cline as lead guitarist has taken my favorite american live act (radiohead still my number 1 live favorite) up a notch to the upper stratospheres of excellence.i said this about radiohead last year and i'll say it about wilco. watching these guys is INSPIRING. to be so good and to know they've worked so hard to get here inspires me to achieve greatness in everything i do. what more can you say about an act than walking out inspired? screw self help books like the secret. go on tour with wilco instead!tweedy's newly found sobriety seemed to be particularly sensitive to the amount of marijuan smoke in the air as he made more than a few comments to it, all in jest. at one point he begged the audience that they and everyone should stop using the expression "loves me some, as in i loves me some marijuana." another was that us the crowd, "smelled high" but stated that portland beat us hands down for quantity. the songs are a bit of a blur. impossible germany, either way, handshake drugs, sunken treasure, a shot in the arm, and a blistering spiders(kidsmoke). they're taking this stuff to the next level. i MUST MUST get some live recordings from this tour.what a treat! now, who's got the bootleg? we got mogger supertopsecret up close with a photo badge. enjoy his killer shots!......

  5. Anna says "but stated that portland beat us hands down for quantity" meh, as long as they don't beat you for quality :) Glad you all had fun. I need to stop smiling every time I read "the Greek" :)

  6. goodmusiconly says So envious, but I'll be seeing them this coming Sunday in Colorado and I CANNOT wait (especially to hear Nels rip it up on "Side with the Seeds"). Kudos to Eric for taking some excellent pics! You might check in on "this web site":http://www.archive.org/details/etree over the coming weeks to see if a live recording shows up...

  7. steve simon says they are the best american band in rock n roll today. i loved hearing misunderstood( though i could do w/o the 40 some "thank you's" at the end of the tune......i had not heard that since 2001 maybe) though the way they re-did suken treasure didn't work IMO. they swapped the set list a bit from 2 months ago and even re arranged a couple of things mid tour, which is very rare! their new guitarist is worth the price of admission alone, what a frenetic trip( but good). that they can ignore so many of my old favorites( let alone a token something from Uncle Tupelo) and still blow me away, now that is a sign of a great band.

  8. Bryan says I saw them in Portland and I too was completely blown away. It was an incredible blend of power, beauty, lyrical genius and sonic bliss. Tweedy and Cline's guitar interplay was mindblowing, particularly during Impossible Germany. Wow! It's been a while since I've this, but this is a band I would go on tour for....

  9. Augusts1 says Not seen them live in person but have seen them on several live webcasts like Lollapoolaza over a year ago & Coachella or Bonnaroo this year & they were AH-MAZING. Nels just f'n shreds on his guitar he's such a wizard & the rest of the band were mind blowingly great. I actually prefer seeing them online cause you get closeups of their playing whereas in person even the big screens are usually far from the cheap seats. Sounds like you had a great time.

  10. elizabeth says Ah, so jealous! I would have given anything to be at that show. The latest Wilco is on the heaviest rotation in this house, and that first song is a killer sunday-morning-slow-dance-with-the-baby-daughter kind of song. Glad it was a great show. Each time I have seen them they far exceeded my expectations.

  17. pinkertonwasbetter says YES! I saw them last night at the Santa Barbara Bowl!!! The show was PHENOMENAL. Nels Clines was sick. Jeff was hilarious. It was mostly an older crowd (I'm pretty sure I was the only one not wearing some sort of shade of khaki) who took full advantage of their seats by sitting through the most 1/4 of the show. Initially the first row of seats was empty and Jeff Tweedy said something to the likes of "You Californians and your time. If these folks don't show up soon, I'm gonna hand these seats off to someone who deserves them!" A little while later, after the crowd got into "I'm Trying to Break Your Heart" and hands started to wave and fists started to pump, he said "now it's starting to be more like a show! i bet most of you folks were like (mock older man voice) 'i'm glad this is all seating! getting up would be simply...BARBARIC!'" when the show ended i felt as though i had awoken from a really good dream. i'm going to see them on Wednesday at the Greek in la and again on thursday for the taping of the Jay Leno show. ~Roxy

  19. kaluss says unbelievable pics dave. i didn't think i'd ever say this, especially after all the fantastic live music in the bay area...but "i'm jealous, good bands don't really play where i live". ugh.

  20. pinkertonwasbetter says I should probably make a separate post for this, but I believe i have an extra ticket up for grabs to see the Wilco taping for the Leno show over at NBC studios in Burbank for any fans... ~Roxy
