Upstairs, the main reception is like the lounge of an exclusive club. Young people, dreaming of stardom, stand in wonder breathing in the atmosphere, looking at memorabilia - platinum CDs, photos of stars, framed press reports, Billboard charts. For an aspiring artist or manager, just to step into the building is a thrill. The impression is of a corporation dedicated to the success of its artists, almost altruistic in its understanding of their needs.Yet it's nothing but a flytrap. Artists go there dreaming of being signed. But out of every 10 signed nine will fail. A contract with a major record company was always a 90 per cent guarantee of failure. In the boardroom the talk was never of music, only of units sold. Artists were never the product; the product was discs - 10 cents' worth of vinyl selling for $10 - 10,000 per cent profit - the highest mark-up in all of retail marketing. Artists were simply an ingredient, without even the basic rights of employees.Imagine the outcry if people working in a factory were told that the cost of the products they were making would be deducted from their wages, which anyway would only be paid if the company managed to sell the products. Or that they would have to work for the company for a minimum of 10 years and, at the company's discretion, could be transferred to any other company at any time.Recently, the Wall Street Journal investigated the industry and concluded that 'for all the 21st-century glitz that surrounds it, the popular music business is distinctly medieval in character: the last form of indentured servitude.'More at:http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,2241544,00.html#article_continueRead the article and then ask yourself a couple of questions. 1. Who the hell would sign a 360 deal with these people?2. Should we really feel bad that this industry is suffering?3. Will the music still survive if the industry does come to and? My answer to that one is yes, music always finds a way, however the days of the rich rockstar are coming to an end. I'd say we're the introduction of the middle class income rock star. We may end up with better music in the long run.

  2. Jonh Ingham says 1. The stupid and the clever. The latter being the Madonnas of the world who can take these guys to the bank. 2. As far as major labels are concerned, not at all. 3. Music will always survive. The business is another matter. The mega-rich rock star still exists but I think that starting about 10 years ago a musician needed to understand whether he was a musician in the format of the "old days", where you played a gig, got in your car and drove to the next gig and did that 200 nights a year, or in showbusiness and did the Britney thing. The middle class income rock star is a good way of describing it. The Napier-Bell article is really good. He's a good writer and has a lot of stories. As manager of the Yardbirds, Japan and Wham, he's definitely seen it all.

TylerDurden says great article...the industry is a giant cock desperately seeking someone to suck it real deep...excuse my graphic depicture..."here little girl, you'll be big and famous, lots of money and respect"...then she's crying on the curb penniless and with an aching arse, the industry with the money and a good laugh at someone else's expense, literally....... as John put it, it's morelike a middle class income rock star...forget the fame and big record sales...go for the show-to-show fun of being a rock star...it's time the inevitable fall of the industry came and went so we can get on with our lives....
