WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Life and Love Heard Through the Mix Tape

Posted over 2 years ago
From npr.orgA good mix tape is like a little chunk of history you can hold in your hand. It's a plastic time capsule, a memorial to who you were and what you were thinking when you wrote out that hand-lettered playlist. For writer Rob Sheffield, those tapes are a way to keep alive the memory of his wife, Renee. She died unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism. His new book Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time, tells the story of their relationship in 15 beat-up, old cassettes. Sheffield is a contributing editor at Rolling Stonemagazine.

  1. Dale says I've been listening to the audiobook version of this, as narrated by Rob Sheffield himself. It's very poignant and touching. It makes me want to make more mixes for my wife.

  2. davesonic says I know I felt a little guilty reading this, thinking I've only made a couple of mixes for my wife.

  3. Groon says when I first met my wife I made a set of mixed tapes for her, 4 sides in all, starting with my "normal" music and going all the way to the bizarre stuff, just so she could know what she was getting into. She never listened to it, not even once! Grrrrrrr.
