Recent discovery for me: 60's folk rocker David Ackles, who generally did a very theatrical type of frequently heartbreaking story song. His albums are mostly only sort of in print, I think, but there are several here on Mog. "American Gothic" is the cult fav album and I can't disagree. It's more of a winter album, I'd say, but go to.
But also: despite being not that well known, his songs were covered by a few other artists. Here are a few Ackles covers, one by Julie Driscoll and one by Elvis Costello & Elton John.

David Ackles...a name from the past.........".who generally did a very theatrical type of frequently heartbreaking story song. ."
In other words....over-emoting. (Think: Graham Nash, Tom Russell)
I recall seeing the tv episode with Elton on Elvis's Spectacle. Think the first season is available on DVD. It remains one of the most interesting and eclectic interview/performance shows, far better than Later with Jooles. I don't remember their doing this particular number, but David Ackles is strong stuff. Don't see Tom Russell as over-emoting but maybe I'll uncrate American Gothic on vinyl and give it a listen. It's been a long time. The yarns Elvis and Elton told about their mutual love for Motown, and bailing out Martha and the Vandelas when the label sent them to London for gigs without enough travel money to get their stage clothes out of the cleaners was a hoot. BTW, if you want over-emote, check out Scott Walker. Love and kisses to DMDM from the (very) left Coast.
LMAO. Thanks Bob.
